Probably a bit late, but its really easy. Just follow the notes in the workshop manual.
Quick replacement guide: Remove Rad Quick Release Panel. Remove Engine Cover Remove Fan. Drain Anti-freeze at Radiator lower hose (offside). Using suitable tool (pliers/water pump pliers) remove the 3 hose clips on the 3 hoses into the Thermostat. Remove Thermostat Fit new Thermostat by connecting hoses and securing with clips. Make sure Thermostat is located correctly. Make sure all hoses are connected and routed correctly. Refill and bleed the system. Then refit removed ancilleries. Run engine and check for leaks. Thats very basic, but a good starter for 10. Best top tip I can give is to buy a bleed hose screw before you start the job. They are about £3 and will save a lot of problems if you snap the bleed screw! Chan Only Alcohol Can Save me Now Nanocom Available in the North West |

Thanks for that Chan, I haven't actually got round to doing it yet, it's down for doing next weekend,
Thanks for the tip with the bleed screw, I'll add it to the list. Tdci 110 DC |

Hardest bits are getting the fan off and those stoopid hose clips. The hoses are different diameters and have different size clips. make sure you have suitable size pliers for all the clips before you start the job! Good Luck Chan Only Alcohol Can Save me Now Nanocom Available in the North West |

Ah ok that makes sense.
Thanks again Chan, I'll check the hoses before I start, don't like having to walk to the toolshop/motorfactors for things I forgot Tdci 110 DC |

What a crap job to do. I don't think the coolant was ever changed in her and them stupid clips were out to ruin my day! But I got done in the end.
After about 5 minutes driving (after bleeding) the temp gauge looks like this and it didn't increase anymore. Click image to enlarge Is that too low or is that the standard Td5 temp? It wasn't too cold out last nite, maybe 4/5 deg celcius and I gave it a good run to try and get it warmer. The heater definately works too (so i presume I bled it properly) Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Tdci 110 DC |

Mine's the same too. The needle is probably about half the distance from the logo as is shown on your picture. That could just be a consequence of you renewing the coolant though and if you've got heat from the heater and it isn't over-heating generally then I wouldn't be too concerned. Darren

Sorry to hear it was a pig. The clips are the hardest,eh?
From your pic I would say that it still has some air in their somewhere. Mine sits a bit higher and others I have seen also sit higher. If your running lower than norm your engine won't be as efficient as it could be. Did you put the heater knobs to full heat when topping up? Up to you, but if it was mine I would be bleeding it again. Chan Only Alcohol Can Save me Now Nanocom Available in the North West |

my td5 ran with the temp gauge vertical. as did all the other td5 defenders i drove through work or otherwise.
if its cold ambient and the heater is on full it can take a while to warm up, around 0 deg mine used to take forever to get to normal temp with heater on max. temp on mine would also drop from vertical if sat in traffic in near 0 with heater on max. viscous works as it should i take it?
