You could try removing the thermostat. It will eliminate a thermostat problem (new ones can be faulty).
I guess you dunked the old one in boiling water to see if it opened or not? Is it the same as the 300, which has a viscus fan? Does the fan cut in and run ok? Be careful when mucking about with the cooling system when it is hot. If you break a pipe or take the coolant cap off, the coolant will vaporise & cause very nasty scalds. Just a few ideas. Hopefuly it will not be the head gasket. |

200 and 300 are very cool running engines normally.
I assume the water pump is working? Thermostats do fail as mentioned Mike |

check and double check all the earth straps to the engine, chassis and box.

Mine is the opposite, it barely gets into the white! Running even cooler now that I have changed the radiator. Thermostat is next on the agenda.Went down on the emissions test recently. The mechanic said she was 500 revs short of the required maximum revs so he could not test her. Doing checks afterwards I found that the adjustment screw on the pedal was preventing it travelling down to it's maximum. I have adjusted it back to give full movment now. The butterfly on the injector pump was not reaching the stop screw. It is now. Just thought I would mention it to you. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

i changed tested the temp sender unit and that was ok, water pump sounds healthy and no leaks, just wondering how the earth straps to engine chassis or gbox could make a diff? just that i had a clutch installed shortly before this problem occured...wondering if the earth to the gbox could be at fault? any ideas Amar

My 200tdi had a similar 'problem', when the cooling electic fan was turned on (mines manually switched) the guage rose quite a bit. well into the red. Earth strap was renewed and problem solved, I'm thinking that if you have an electric fan that turns on automatically (say when on a motorway) at a preset temp then the same might happen.
I had previously changed the sender and guage for a vdo but didn't help. Now sits nicely at 80 all the time and i never switch on the fan. Hope you have a similar simple fix. DJ |

I the earth strap is not connected in the right place and with a good contact, other electrical items can earth through the temp sender, think about it the engine and gear box are on rubber mounts so one of the easyest paths is through the sender circuit. |

Sounds like it could be an earth problem as the clutch was changed just before the problems started. Many cars have the earth strap located on one of the bolts holding the bell housing to the engine. Have a crawl underneath & see if you can see the strap, it may just be dangling & the clutch monkeys forgot to re-connect it. (I forgot it once & the choke cable became the earth & got red hot )
You could run in a couple of temporary earth straps from any convienient bolt on the engine to thew chassis. Also worth checking the battery lead which runs to the outrigger below is ok. Last edited by niglyn on 1st Aug 2009 8:19pm. Edited 1 time in total |
