Having worked directly for Red Adair in the 1970's in Iran i can only say that i hope they close the well in before a fire starts... I was having a beer with a survivor of Piper Alpha last night in my local and his story would make some book... Safety First, thats a joke! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

One of the legacies of Piper Alpha is a massive improvement in process safety and emergency responses.
We are now very fortunate in northern Europe to have comparatively safe oil and gas industries, but we can never be complacent, the consequences of losing control of the process is horrendous, one of the worst situations is the loss of containment of gaseous hydrocarbon.

Although statistically a very safe industry, in June last year 4 felllow contractors died on Pembroke Refinery in an explosion & fire, which is 4 too many. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

I agree with you completely, but as time goes on people once again become complacent and we can see this from macondo which has shocked the industry and new policies have be put in place.

It's the same for any industry, something happens, then measure are put in place. Ya many years later something else happe d and new measure are put into place. Russell

The biggest lie in the oil industry "SAFETY FIRST". The signs are everywhere but it should really read "MONEY FIRST". 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong! Russell

That would be a first? Platform totally evacuated as gas is escaping under installation and a sheen is visible on the surface. Not good. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Good job by all the emergency response teams in getting the folks off both installations. Thumbs Up
The Northern north sea is pea-soup at the mo - so I've heard from my B2B..

We do take safety VERY seriously and the old style 'hire'em-Fire'em' has largely gone in the UK - this is why we have fewer incidents and accidents out there. Cool
its not perfect - but a lot better than when I stared in the 80's . Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Safety is always first on my jobs. I want everyone to go home, a little tiered after a hard days work but in one piece, I like every one to take home plenty of money not no scars. I am a turnaround Engineer and most common risk to work force is from occupational safety issues (cuts, falls, bumps, eye injuries), however it is the process safety (big bangs and fire) risks that although seldom can have horrendous consequences.

There are 19 left on there making it safe according to the news, no matter how robust the safe havens are it must be pretty scary place to be. I've delt with a few leaks in my time and to be surrounded by hydrocarbon, especially gas, is not much fun at all. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

So when you next fill up the tank or get the gas bill, don't complain about the price just think about the thousands of people who do their bit to get it to you. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

Thanks for the update RFT,
Good to know that the team is doing their best and wish them good luck!
I forget to say that I'm a Medic/Safety co-ordinator for an offshore platform ... so totally agree with everyone going home in one piece! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Rig Engineer, where it is not a case of "of it ain't broke don't fix it" but a case of "how do we know it's right? Or is there a better and safer way?" Thumbs Up Russell
