Jack up one rear wheel (After chocking the front ones)
release handbrake Crawl underneath with a 17mm socket. adjust the nut on the back of the handbrake drum, one notch at a time, until the drum/rear prop won't turn, slacken off one or 2 notches. get back up into the cab, pull the handbrake on and see if it feels "right" (should be 3 or 4 clicks from off to fully on) |

Not easily.... the holes for the fixing screws for the switch are drilled into the mounting plate for the handle, so you'd have re-drill, or you could bend the little arm that presses the switch. looks a bit flimsy though, so be careful!

While you're at it, put some insulation on the wire. It rubs on the mounting and will eventually rub through.

a-just adjusted mine (pardon the pun). Took less than 10 minutes and I was shocked how far out it was
Even though mine's a Puma with a cable-actuator, I followed an older Haynes handbook - tighten the adjusting nut until the jacked wheel won't move (conveniently kickable from underneath) then back off the nut 1 and 1/2 turns. Now it takes 3 handbrake notches from full-off to full-on Bloody German dealers said 5-7 notches and near-vertical lever is "standard" - bloody idiots Still have to see if the clattering goes though - I will report back... p.s. I honestly believe 6 months membership of this forum should be compulsory before buying a Defender Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
