For reasons too painful to describe (and embarrassing) I need to repair a small hole in the rear door. The simplest solution is to put a rivet through (hardly noticeable on a Defender). As the door is steel, I'll use Duralac anti corrosion on the rivet but is there any way to absolutely stop water from getting under the rivet head? I have creeping crack sealant but is there another "trick" to this kind of thing?

Okay
Well, I was drilling holes through the inside skin to fit a window grill in the beautiful sunshine when I suddenly remembered (too late): a) there is an outside skin b) it's not very far away from the inside one c) it's very thin d) big drills are heavy and carry considerable momentum... It's the kind of mistake one only makes once but still needs urgent repair, since LR (in their infinite wisdom) make the door out of steel 
I have laquered rivets in the right colour. Advice please (and preferably not the "grow a brain" type)? Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

From the inside get a load of sealant squirted around the rivet, should do the trick |

Will have to take the grille off again for that then
"After" = 3mm hole from outside, temporarily blocked with butyl (please don't make me show this...) God, I feel stupid  Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

A dab of Sikaflex under the rivet head before setting it and use a sealed 'Advel' type rivet - not just an ordinary pop rivet.

Just checked out "Advel" - are we talking insanely expensive riveting guns? Never thought of a seal though (doh) - surely I could make one from butyl sheet for a standard large flange rivet ? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Well we've all done it. I remember thumping a cold chisel through a very expensive lorry rad
Once your vehicle has been christened the inevitable following marks don't hurt so much. About a month after I got mine I put a 5" scratch down my rear quarter panel from a staple sticking out of a box - didn't bother me much at all funnily enough, you have to look hard to see it. What I am annoyed about are scratches on the bonnet which are quite visible caused by my me pulling hose form a garage pressure washer over the bonnet - just a stupid thing to do but no point in fretting over it, it's getting it's lives character marks as I am using it for work and when we go camping with the kids  well say no more. It's to be used first and foremost
I don't mind scratching it myself but god help anyone else that does - my wife's terrified to go near it |
