One year with a new 110

Hello All

1 year down the line with 110 XS USW (first landrover), been sat in the background taking knowledge from the forum and now actually feel I might be able to give something back. Bought new from Hunters in Southampton. First time I went there I realised the salesman knew nothing at all about Defenders (is this normal?) So I went away and sorted all the extras myself, got a bit of a discount off retail but nothing to shout about. Drove it straight out the showroom onto a ferry and 500 miles across France. Back in the UK 2 weeks later and still smiling.

Modifications from new:
Winch (gave up asking for rope instead of wire, confused salesman)
Rear work lamp (Would be nice to have a light on the dash to tell me it is on, not good on the M27 at night!)
A-frame bumper

Modifications myself:
New stereo with built in handsfree (no good at 70)
Powder coat wheels black
Noise killer in load space and engine blanket (big difference)

Warranty at 4000 miles :
New transfer box. Viscous clatter after long drives when coasting up to a junction. Fitted in Truro LR (Great service)
Driver footwell filling with water from one of the three windscreen bolts when it rained.
Door seals coming off.
Windows unwinding themselves. (mostly the one on the opposite corner from me)

Gets driven off-road once a week in the winter and it is still me that runs out of bottle before it stops going forward.
Lost 2 tags on the back of my trousers and ripped a new jacket getting in.
Thinking about a re-map but worried about the warranty.
Collecting squeaks and rattles every week.

Loving every minute of it. A year down the line and I still smile every time I get in.

Looking forward to adding a bit to this forum rather than just taking the info off.

You may wanna look at getting the rear mud flap strengthening brackets before they rip through the body work

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost to get the wheels powered coated and where did you have it done?

Been considering doing mine.

Forgot to mention;
2nd week, every time I put my foot on the clutch the revs went up 200 before dropping off to let you change gear. Turned out to be a brake light fuse that I blew with a faulty trailer board. Very strange... as soon as the fuse was replaced it was fine again. LR assist said it trips something in the ECU.

Hi Stu.

A1 powder coatings in Woolston (Southampton). It was about £45/ wheel + VAT. Drove it there one morning and got it back the next afternoon. They do all the removal, balancing etc. Went for satin black which matches the running bars etc pretty well.

Hi Zagato,

About 8000 for the first year. time for service, I expect I'll get the guys in Truro to do it as I'm down that way for the next month. Give me a chance to check for the transfer box clatter on the way down there!!

Seems a common issue - always thought it was the handbrake adjustment problem, maybe diifs are causing it to go each time if you have already had a new Trans box

I'll let you know if the clatter is back in a couple of weeks when I head down there. I'm on a sailing boat in Falmouth for a month but working so not off the dock unfortunately. Anyone know any decent greenlanes down that way?

Surprisingly there are not that many green lanes as there are so many great little ordinary lanes anyway. LRO found this when they tried to do an article on them. More around the Plymouth area

One small stretch is If you go to Trevone, drive past the beach, go up the steep lane, hang a right into the lane which has the farm house, drive along that farm track through a few fields you will eventually come to a lane which will take you into the back route to Padstow - very nice off season. Trevone has an amazing beach and high dramatic cliffs where the huge blow hole is (can climb down it!)

My 110 xs usw was bought new in September and it has always had this clatter when coasting up to a junction. I never realised it was a transfer box issue... I guess it is worth getting it looked at?
