Etch primer is pricey stuff necessary for aluminium etc. An ordinary cheaper primer can be put on the steel rear cross-member IF it needs it, you can usually just paint over if the old paint is good with no rust etc Thumbs Up

Spraying is definitely the way to go on this, brush strokes can just look a right mess if not done properly even on working vehicles, may as well do it right in the first place, can ruin it otherwise Rolling Eyes

yer as zag said you only need to prime bare metal or rust repairs if the crossmember is good well should be on a td5 06 give it a light scotch/ key really fine and spray it black simples Thumbs Up im guessing its just faded as my 90 was when i got it paint was flakey were someone bojed it up last time so i stripped it back to bare metal and had it sprayed out of a gun Mr. Green

I tried to do mine with POR-15 (The UV resistant type!) with a brush and made a real pigs ear of it as it's thick stuff, so I took it off before it dried. It can't be that much to get it sprayed professionally if you were really conscious of appearance £50 maybe (was quoted £70 to do a rear door so should be about right). How much is it for two cans £20-30 maybe so not much more!

Another vote for Plastikote. I am not an enthusiast of Hammerite smooth, it seems a bit brittle to me.

Exactly what I'm thinking of doing with my 2006 90 Thumbs Up I was going to use the hammerite paint as it states no primer required........satin black? Life is not a rehearsal!

If you do use Hammerite then be careful in the future what you spray on top of it. It does react badly with other paints and you end up with coracle glaze effect.

I stripped to bare metal, then acid etch primer followed by normal primer, rub back with wet and dry and then top coat of satin black. Thumbs Up

any black tractor paint or Halfords satin black have worked very well on mine in the past. Cheers
