Trailer law

Wonder if someone can point me in the right direction of how to get a non-plated trailer sorted out with a plate? By plate I mean the one which needs to show year of manufacture, max load etc? I'm looking to buy one for trailering motorcycles and the one I'm looking at has no plate. My hitch is plated (Dixon Bate) so all ok there, but I can't seem to find out (even after googling) how to get the trailer sorted. Any help appreciated.

IIRC if it is built before a certain date it doesn't need to be plated. Sorry I can't help much beyond that.

From 97 all trailers need plates as far as I am aware

Just found this in Schedule 8 of the 1986 C&U regs:

Particulars to be shown on plate for trailers (including trailers forming part of articulated vehicles)

1.Manufacturer's name.
2.Chassis or serial number.
3.Number of axles.
4.Maximum weight for each axle (a).
5.Maximum load imposed on drawing vehicle (b).
6.Maximum gross weight (c).
7.Maximum weight in Great Britain for each axle (a) (e).
8.Maximum gross weight in Great Britain (c) (f).
9.Year of manufacture (d).

(a)This weight as respects each axle is the sum of the weights to be transmitted to the road surface by all the wheels of that axle.
(b)Only for trailers forming part of articulated vehicles or where some of the weight of the trailer or its load is to be imposed on the drawing vehicle. This item need not be completed in the case of a converter dolly.
(c)This weight is the sum of the weights to be transmitted to the road surface by all the wheels of the trailer, including any weight of the trailer to be imposed on the drawing vehicle.
(a), (b), (c)References to the weights to be transmitted to the road surface by all or any of the wheels of the trailer are references to the weight so to be transmitted both of the trailer and of any load or persons carried by it and references to the weights to be imposed on the drawing vehicle are references to the weights so to be imposed both of the trailer and of any load or persons carried by it except where only the load of the trailer is imposed on the drawing vehicle.
(d)This item need not be completed in the case of a trailer manufactured before 1st April 1970.
(e)This item need not be completed in the case of a trailer manufactured before 1st October 1972.
(f)This item need not be completed in the case of a trailer manufactured before 1st October 1972 or which forms part of an articulated vehicle.

This seems to suggest that anything built after 1972 should have a plate with all of the details described in items 1 - 9. However, the regulation it refers to, no.66, is only concerned with commercial trailers. I can't find any reference to any requirement for plates on trailers for domestic or personal use. Darren

you can only get one from the trailer manufacturer

Blank plates are readily available on the net. Just type 'trailer vin plates' into Google. Darren

Be careful about buying a trailer without a manufacturers plate, it maybe stolen, recent reports state that around 30% of trailers for sale secondhand are stolen

Thanks all. There seem to be an awful lot of bike trailers around with no plates. They seem to be home made and not expensive, but over the past few months I've seen loads of vehicles with small trailers being stopped at VOSA stations and weighbridges, no doubt getting fined left, right and centre for not having the correct plates etc.

Ifor trailers both new and used are kept on a keepers register to combat theft and stolen vehicles

When I bought my Ifor secondhand the owner gave me a purchase/instruction booklet, but I have yet to notify IW of the change
