3yr service & first MOT
Servicing cost (including MOT) for my Defender:

Marshalls (my dealer) £575
Hartwell’s (Crooks) £466
Stratstones £390
Rogers of Bedford (Respected independent) £295

I am going back to Marshalls to say how unhappy I am with that price and if they can match Strastones (Newport Pagnell) they can do it. If they do not then I may go to Rogers as Stratstone is really too far.

I personally don't think Marshalls will drop that much. I REALLY wanted to keep LR stamps in the book but the cost of their services are just stupid.

Do you think I am going about this the right way?

Boy

Definitely. When my D3 needed a service I called around and found one Farnell's charging less than another and a third non Farnell dealer being somewhere in the middle.

I called my usual dealer and asked them to price match the lowest and after much grumbling said "oh, it is over 3yrs old so I can give you the 3yr+ discount" or some such blx.

Wish I had done it years before.

Having said that the service from the guys where I usually take mine has been pretty consistently good.

Definitely worth a haggle Thumbs Up

I'm with you on having a nice LR stamped book. It's so nice to pick up a second hand motor with a fully stamped dealership service book. I don't mind paying a bit over the odds for the LR stamp and peace of mind IF the job is being done correctly especially if you are going to keep the vehicle for life Very Happy Having said that £150 over the odds say is OK but the problem is when a days labour is needed to sort something, then a decent independent will have to be found.

It's really nice also if you pick a up a motor with all the old tax discs, brochures, correspondence so I keep all that as well, not that I will ever sell mine Very Happy I even tax mine on a 6 monthly basis to have the extra tax disc for the file Rolling Eyes Sad eh! Laughing Whistle

Good luck, mention this thread on the forum as well, it always add a little more pressure on them Wink

EDIT - just called my branch they charge £445 + £54 for the MOT but you can expect 10% off that so £449 Thumbs Up

I have often pondered this one, but not purely for reasons of cost.

I agree that it is comforting to have a book full of LR stamps, but I have found that the standard of workmanship varies greatly between dealerships. I struggle to see how any company can justify nearly £600 for a service when one actually considers the work done.

On top of that, I would prefer that my (modified) vehicles are serviced by the companies that I trust to perform the modifications in the first place. They better understand the uses that the vehicles are put to. I also have my vehicles services at much small intervals than the manual would suggest - basically after or before each major trip. Zag's point about additional work is very relevant. Also, would an LR dealer know how to dismantle a winch, service and re-assemble? And if they did, would I want to pay their labour rate?

Having said that, I have found that Marshalls Landrover in Lincoln are superb when it comes to diagnosing and warranty work. They have a few really switched on guys there. So much so, that even though I now live in Stourport, I still take my in-warranty vehicles to them. They also did the heated breather mod there to such a standard that it looks like a factory fit.

kind regards

Ian

I have just written to them and stating that my brand loyalty to Marshalls will only go so far and that I am a working chap so unless they can match the dealer (not the independent) that is closest to them
I will be unfortunately have no option but go elsewhere this time. TBH the gap is so large I do not think they will match it and if that is the case I may end up going to the Indy as they are closer.

My last two Defenders have been bought form them but I really can't see why the cost are so far apart.

My previous TD5 was always serviced by Hunters (so will my current Puma), and I was most surprised when the fourth or fifth bill was considerably cheaper than those before.

The Receptionist explained that most owners take their new cars back to the dealer for servicing during the warranty period, then shop around for a cheaper quote.

Consequently, the dealer brings his price down to compete with “Joe’s Garage”.

“For the same service and parts as was done previously at a higher price?” “Yup”

If you’re happy with your main dealer’s servicing, it’s definitely worth negotiating. At least their prices are reasonably constant, even if high to cover the coffees, courtesy car etc. My experience with independent outfits has been that after one or two (loss-leader?) jobs, their prices in any case start creeping up to those of the main dealer…

Peter

Edited to add: oh, and don't be frightened to supply your own oil and stress "no additives" to prevent them charging you extra for a bit of windscreen wash and a petrol treatment you didn't need.

I suspect they will. Fingers crossed.

I emailed a couple of dealers yesterday for a price on 24 month service. Only one reply so far from Yeovil @ £560, which I think is a bit steep, so will try further afield. Happy to travel to Christchurch, Exeter or Southampton in needed as they are all just over an hour from me. Rich

I wish you'd posted this 2 weeks ago! I just had the exact same works done on mine... over £500 spent on both at a respected dealer (not official LR) nearby! To be fair the work was always good, I've just never asked around! Definitely will start now!
