Loved the breath taking Bentley going around the track Bow down

My all time favourite motor Bow down The Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato comes in second place Wink

Could get a real one for that money though, well a Derby not a Blower

Come to Brooklands on New Years day Very Happy The Bentley boys come out to play as well as some other rare and beautiful classics. I was ushered in to park my Jag XK120 next to James Martins GT0 250 SWB...they didn't realise it was a replica Rolling with laughter I didn't hang around for questions Embarassed

Am I right in remembering that there are only something like 6 genuine blowers left in existance so stumbling across that barn find would be like winning the lottery Whistle

Doesn't look right Stu, the green is too light Sad Tell him it's very nice though Wink

Not sure how many Blowers are left but Birkin had 50 built to homologate the model for Le Mans. They are not liked now and then as they stressed the engine too much. WO Bentley thought they were the devils work but Tim Birkin went ahead with the builds to try and re-dress the competitiveness with Mercedes (we are talking late 1920's!). I don't think a blower ever one at Le Mans but the speed sixes did. The company effectively went bust in 1930.

It's all an incredible era and story if you can ever pick up a book about it. The lavish lifestyle of one "Bentley Boys" in particular whilst the rest of the country was battling the depression. The mechanics were actually called "The Bentley boys" first then the drivers started to be called the same which they didn't like. Sorry for the patchy facts, cannot remember too much of it!

What is a shame is the amount of poor Blower replicas there are especially as so many lovely standard Bentleys have been chopped up for the Blower image Sad

The car on Top Gear wasn't a Bentley - it looked a bit like one, but it was built on a Rolls-Royce Phantom 2 chassis with a Rolls-Royce Meteor (not Merlin) engine. Rear axle is apparently also Phantom 2, gearbox is an Allison auto. In fact I am not aware of a single Bentley component on the car at all.

It is undoubtedly a stunning creation, but it is NOT a Bentley. (I am not belittling it by the way, it is beautiful, but is isn't a Bentley).

The Blower Bentleys have always been over-rated for some reason; it was a car which W O Bentley never wanted built and indeed Bentley refused to build it, so the blower cars, the brainchild of racing driver Tim Birkin, were privately built with funding provided by Dorothy Paget. Although fast they were never very reliable.

A good "Speed Six" was a better car by far. The 8-litre was probably the ulitmate Bentley, but very few were built.

I bet they had fun and games getting it through the SVA test. I remember reading about the court battles it took to get the Suffolk SS100 Jaguar to meet regulations. http://www.suffolkjaguar.com/

A lot of things are taken off and other bits added immediatley after the test on many types of replicas Whistle Some are even left unpainted so that when they take the modern indicators off for instance and put period ones on or none at all it, doesn't mess up the paint job Laughing

Bottom line with these replicas is that THEY ARE REPLICAS. It doesn't matter how breathtaking they are as soon as you say it's a replica peoples faces just drop, and your instant keen friend wanders off to look at an E-Type. History counts for an awful lot with classic/vintage cars.

If I had half a million to spend on a motor it wouldn't be a replica Bentley but a real one and spending the same amount on an E type replica is madness. Spending a quarter of a million on a replica Aston Martin Zagato is different - you just can't buy a real one so needs must and these top end replicas including Ferrari GTO's do have that necessary respect and cache. I'm not so sure that the replica Bentley will ever have that respect...

Bow down The Zagato, said by many to be the most beautiful motor ever built and I would have to agree Laughing Should of seen the pigs ear Zagato made of redesigning an XK150 though Rolling Eyes Don't mess with William Lyons designs he got it right first time Wink

And another classic...err the Landy not the XK120 Wink

Another one for your viewing pleasure Very Happy

I met W.O.Bentley once.
He owned a Morris Minor 1000 and couldn't understand why anyone wanted one of those 'big green lorries'.

The idiots who decided it would be a good idea to close one lane of the A3088 (one of the main roads into Yeovil) for a week and put no signs up to say it was being closed. Absolute carnage this morning.

Then I find out the diversion is thru Chard on the A30 - slight problem, there is a 26 mile diversion on the road to get there - it's closed Big Cry

And work, my pension scheme being closed in June, 60 days consultation blah blah - tuff luck on any old gits looking to take early retirement as you will be hit the hardest.

Time to look for a new job me thinks.

I feel better now Rolling with laughter

Sorry Embarassed

My beef for today...

Found an on street parking spot in town, which would have been pretty easy to reverse into if it wasn't for the goof sat in a Corsa who had about two or three feet behind him and the car behind. I managed to squeeze into the space infront of him, get out of the car, give him a Censored look and THEN he reverses back two feet.. WHY NOT DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE!?
