Best oil for high mileage manual gearbox (r380)
Hi I want to change the gearbox Oil as I don't know last time it was done. I'm aware that this is usually done every 2 years.

I have a 1999 td5 manual. It is on its original gearbox and has done 192000 miles.

I have read that the difflock evolution oils are very good but pricy. I'm thinking of buying The evolution 2 for the gearbox and the evo 1 for the diffs.

My questions are

are they worth the money Question

Are they the best for my high mileage gearbox Question

Are there any better alternatives Question

Value your advice, thanks in advance Thumbs Up

Alternatives are discussed here:

No idea if the stated info is correct though.

I'd stick with the Havoline/Texaco MTF94 as stated by Land Rover.

Difflock stuff is great Bow down Bow down

Don't bother putting it in your diff's tho, not worth it.

Difflock supply fully synthetic gear oils at an inflated price.

You require:

MTF 75w80 GL4 for the gearbox

75w90 gear oil for the diffs/ transfer box GL5

Morris oils make Lodexol oil suitable for the gearbox (R380 specific)/ also Fuchs sintofluid is available as an alternative (from memory its GL5)

Fully synthetic gear oil 75w90 is readily available any make ok.

I would use fully synthetic oil for gearbox/ transfer box.

Can use semi syn for diffs and change annually.

Motul Gear 300 (fully synthetic) has resurrected two of my old gearboxes - one in a 1974 VW Beetle and the other in a 2003 Audi with synchro problems. It's a bit pricey but I've been seriously impressed.
In retrospect, don't use additives unless as a last resort!

MTF is actually cheapest from your Land Rover dealer in 1ltr bottles, i just had a big search for the stuff for my Range Rover and its the genuine stuff. £6.30ltr If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

For the general record, in the last 2 years we had 2 R380's which didn't like the Morris Lodexol, despite the specs about being R380 friendly. One was in a P38, the other a Discovery2. Morris technical gave us the blurb about it being developed with LR in the Sahara. Rolling Eyes

Just use the MTF94, or spend out on something else mentioned here already.

I had the same thing on my TD5 defender. Now running genuine oil and everything is ok again. I have changed my gearbox oil every 12k from new though, im sure it has helped a lot.

Still doing some more research, I like the thought of a fully synthetic oil but don't like the price of the diff lock evo stuff.

Spotted this

from: Liqui Moly. Fully synthetic gear oil (GL 5) SAE 75 W 90. £6.90 per litre

Looks ok to me Question anybody used it before Question any reason why it would not be suitable Question

Price looks very good to me for fully synthetic gear oil Thumbs Up

in my 300tdi, the 4th gear was almost impossible to select when cold, as soon as it had warmed up it was fine. I spoke to Dave Ashcroft and he suggested the evo oil, works a treat. not tried evo in the diffs but Im going to when the time comes. Thumbs Up
