Does anybody knows a 1:1 switch replacement for the standard heat seating switch ?
I like to replace the original one by a multi level switch for greater comfort. It should fit in the original dashboard position and shouldn't destroy the Defender look'n'feel too much. Thanks, Bernd |

but you need a complete different harness, not only the switch.... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Seems nice idea, but not sure it makes sense in case of a Defender. The standard system (on or off) has a thermostatic setting of the heating elements in the seats which turn the heating off once the seat temp reaches approximately 37°C, or normal body temp.
By adding a multilevel switch alone, that thermostatic control will not change, still will switch off at the set max temp. As that max temp setting means the seats are not heating to a very high temp (at least my seats never get super warm when I turn it on, what would a multilevel switch really do? Other systems, like VW, have indeed a 5 level switch, but levels 3 and up allow the temp to climb to higher °C than in our case. So don't see the interest, unless we would be able to change the max thermostatic turn off point, but that will get very complicated. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I bypassed the thermostat in my drivers seat because it was not working at all. I pulled the back rest cover off, removed the seat heater pad and soldered a wire bridge over the contacts. It gets really nice and warm now, and does not overheat at all. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

You can install a "trigger" like this one.
You can control the temperature by "varying" the on-off duty cycle frequency..... Max temp: always ON (12V) Reduced Temp: ON - OFF - ON - OFF - ....... More long is the OFF period less °C (or °F) you have....... Using this one You can install it on the facia or on the cubby box or on the seat or ...... I suppose that the heaters (back and rest) on the original LR seats are electrically connected in "series". If you install the trigger you can connect the heaters electrically in "parallel". In this way you can have more max warm. Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

I don't know of any switch that would directly replace the heated seat switches and perform the function you describe. However, I have thought of a couple of options that might work - 1. If you don't have headlamp levelling fitted, you could use a modified headlamp levelling switch as a temperature control for both seat heaters - A knob with a plain line instead of the headlamp symbol is available, Part No. YUM10001 (Rover) & YUM10001L (Land Rover) - I believe that the Defender headlamp levelling switch has resistors built in, these would probably not be suitable to use with the load of the seat heaters. The Rover 100/Metro used a heater fan speed selector switch of the same dimensions as the headlamp levelling switch, which had no resistors built in and used an external resistor with multiple taps to control the speed of the fan, but it has a Fan symbol on its scale. Part No. YUK10003 (EEP0106) - £6.95 on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/METRO-HEATER-FAN...0534471630 . I've previously posted details of this switch - here - http://www.lro.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?p=474790#p474790 and here - http://www.d-90.com/forum/showthread.php?p=298971 2. Another option would be to modify the heated seat switches to be non-latching switches. This can be done by either swapping the switch cap onto a live-switching non latching switch body, or you can remove the latching pin from the switch's mechanism. With this done, you would use the non-latching switch to increment the output of something like this - http://www.quasarelectronics.com/cr0025-dc...30v-8a.htm . But you need a resistor pack for obtain the 3 level of warm...
Normally the resistor pack is cooled by the fan air stream.... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

A MOSFET transistor and simple 555 timer IC used as a Pulse Width controllor would allow the temperature to be set at anything between off and maximum .
BTW: if both heaters (seat and back) are normally wired in series I would never wire them in parallel as they will be seriously overloaded ! It would be interesting to know why some people report the heated seats to function very good while others find them to help very little ?
