I was worried about ours having had a massive list of issues (covered under warranty but it was a major battle). 2nd to 3rd is definitely notchy. Oddly, ours seems to get better once the box is warmed up though.

Agree with others here - treat it with a bit of care (don't shove it into each gear, be extra careful when it's cold, etc) and it should be okay. I'm half expecting to need a new one eventually; if I do I'll see my Indy and get an Ashcroft one. About £1500 all in.

I have actually welcomed the cold weather (!) here, as changing gear has become a lot more pleasant (at least until the oil warms up). The Motul oil also brought a significant improvement.
I can live with an iffy gearbox as long as it doesn't keep getting worse. In any event, I'm already saving for an HD Transit box from Ashcroft when the warranty expires - I just hope Ashcroft are still in business in 2 years Rolling Eyes Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

But your gearbox may not give up the ghost in two years, it might continue functioning for 22 - or might give up in 12 months - who knows? Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.

Preferably the former, as long as somewhere like Ashcroft still exists in 22+ years

Finally the gearbox is getting attended to, and the agent has ordered a new gearbox just in case.

Now when I take my foot off the accelerator at 110-110kmh, there's a whoop-whoop sound that seems to come from the rear diff Confused --

Thanks!

wrt the diff, I saw this on another forum, can anyone confirm?

The Puma's have 2 problems, no1 the chrome plating on the crown wheel are not of very hi quality. This causing the pinion and crown not to mesh together very well and you will find yourself stuck in a spar's parking lot with your crown wheel lying on the ground. Only solution is to insist on a diff made in england (they are of superior quality) and not the one made in the states (This is the diffs fitted to all pumas in SA). The workshop manager at our local dealership told us this.

Finally, after a whole year of battling with LR South Africa, their technical advisor does one drive and tells the dealer to replace the gearbox.

So just under 30,000km the landy gets a new rear diff and a new gearbox Rolling Eyes --

some facts

1) the crown wheel and pinions are not chrome plated, they are a ground finish

2) all 110 rear diffs (TBB000270) are made in the UK

3) the design is rubbish, problems are the gear teeth are weak but the big issue is they suffer badly from noise problems in my opinion mainly caused buy poor lubrication and the pinion bearings being overloaded as they are too close together.

we have designed a drop in replacement super strong hypoid diff with locker and HD shafts but can't decide to make it or not,

Dave, I would be delighted to volunteer my DC as a testbed for your rear diff - it would complement the ATB HD front diff I bought from you in December! Thumbs Up

Force 9's and the heavy duty transit upgrade gearbox seem to be the Rolls Royce solution. While I am on the subject a larger engine 5 cylinder Puma would the way to go, not the car like D4. Commercial type engine, bullet proof so to speak.

There's been a lot of talk here and elsewhere about the possibility of fitting the Transit HD gearbox, but has anyone actually done it? If so, is it actually any better?

no, not been done yet,

the 3.2 TDCi 5Cyl transit MT82 is rated to a higher torque capacity, I did some digging to find out the differences and have found that at least 3 (maybe more) of the bearings are much bigger, the 2 boxes are similar in many ways and it looks possible to put the 4 wheel drive back end onto the HD transit box. There is some debate if the main casing is the same, I don't know yet,

we have a customer who is putting this 3.2 TDCi into a defender and will be sending me the HD MT82 to try and convert to 4WD spec,

I will advise the outcome, if this is a goer I can get brand new HD MT82's from ford at reasonable money,

the last 7 failures I have seen on the defender MT82's are :

1 x stripped reverse dog teeth (ramming into reverse)
2 x failed bearings (plain hard work, ie towing digger)
1 x bust props smashing casings (bad prop UJ)
3 x stuck ingear (being heavy handed with shifter)

the HD box will only help with the failed bearings Dave
