My trusty Karcher 620 power washer has given up the ghost.
The power looks ok - the green light on the switch illuminates, and the motor comes on and sounds as usual. Water comes out...but only at normal tap pressure. Normally, when the trigger is not pressed (i.e. no flow) the motor stops until the trigger is pressed again. But the motor doesn't stop anymore when not spraying (just keeps churning) No leaks No pressure at all other than normal tap pressure. I've owned it from new, and it'sd not been abused, but it is about 10 years old! Anyone care to help me diagnose please??? It's the model that looks like this:

Sounds like the pump impellers have given up the ghost, or perhaps the drive shaft has sheared. Something like that that stops the pressure building up, which is why it runs continuosly. Darren

Time to buy a new one.
Don't buy Karcher again, they're penny pinching. Short hoses and leads. Even the detergent bottles are optional extras (which most shops don't stock) Ideally, find one with a ceramic pump if you use it a lot. ....and keep it away from frost! |

treat yourself to a Sthil pressure washer
Not as expensive as you would think and a 8 or 9m hose |

Second Sthil kit. I haven't a pressure washer but petrol, hedge trimmer. strimmer,chainsaw, blower etc They are the best. The councils use them. I don't maintain mine from year to year properly (never changed a plug etc!
 ) but this equipment I rely upon for work always starts, it abusive proof kit  Pays in the long run and short term compared to some rubbish |

A quick Google suggest that a new pump set is around £86.

Wow - thanks for the replies, gents, much appreciated, I've been out on my mountain bike most of the afternoon, and came back to 9 useful replies - great forum
LRA - thanks for the link - sounds like a good diagnisis to me. Zag/BPman - I'm a fan of Stihl as well, owned one of their chainsaws (I have a wood-burning stove) for about a year now - top kit. Martyn/Pom/Laurie - it's kept in a relatively warm garage in Aviemore...but of course it's been very cold here, so the frost may have managed to get into it I guess 
I'll try and take the pump out in the morning. Any ideas if I can confirm (once it's taken off) if it is the pump that's the fault before I part with £86??? Cheers Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Karcher is good kit, provided it isn't left to freeze. our Diesel hot pressure wash is still going very strong.
As already said the Sthil kit is bomb proof, absolutely swear by the chainsaws, strimmers, hedge trimmers and blowers. Alex 110 Tdci Double Cab |
