Anyone in/ know anyone in the the subsea industry/ rigs?
Good evening gents,

Well, time for Tranche 2 on the Army redundancies..... and yet again I am in the bracket (50 of my trade/ rank to go). Last year I was confident I would keep my job, and this year I should be OK again.... but I am being a little more cautious this time just in case I get the letter.

I have looked at many jobs but not much takes my fancy... but I have come across ROV Pilot/tech as it incorporates all the technical things I do in this job with the opportunity to travel the world.

As always the training websites talk of millions of jobs which pay millions of pounds (But according to the Army careers office, I should be a Field Marshall earning £5,000,000 a year by now). Does anyone have any advice/ could point me in the direction of any good advice so that I can scope the market before I commit.

DO you know if he is a ROV Pilot/Tech...... it is the route I am looking at heading down as I am a Guided weapons specialist/ Talon EOD robot operator/ technician.

No luckly he was not and he emails me that mornign to say it was not his rig but had a irend on there. I haven't read the bit you posted but it must have been quite awful. I think two guys were in the water for about two hour.

I work offshore as a Hydrographic Surveyor, I'm offshore at the moment.

ROV training can be hard to get, as there is a lot of competition for jobs and training.

You could take one of two routes. Pay for the training yourself and take the risk of not getting a job at the end, or try and get on a training scheme with a company. Again, it's hard as its a job that many people would like to do.

If you are lucky, don't expect to be doing all the interesting work, the senior guys will be doing that, and it can take a whole to get your hours up etc.

As I don't know your background, you may well be a step ahead of other people due to your military career.

As another thing to look into, have a look at AUVs. They will be the new thing soon, and will require more of an engineering background than the pilot training.

When i worked offshore Navy divers took the diving jobs that were once very well paid and they worked for less and to be honest they were blamed for the reductions in salaries in the early 1980's. Dutch divers had the UK sector guys laid off and there was a lot of mistrust of ex service new starts. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..
