2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Alaska White
Heating System / Temp Gauge Prob
Hi, just joined the forum but been reading it for a while now.

I have an 07 Defender. If I leave the engine idling for any amount of time the temperature gauge drops back down to cold and the heaters blow cold. I have also noticed that it seems to take quite a while to reach operating temperature, and it will never heat up if its left standing and running.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?

I doubt it's a problem. My Td5 does the same this time of year.

Mine has a viscous fan, so it's constantly sucking the air through, this time of year is cold.

I'm sure some of the Tdci chaps will confirm similar soon... Current:D4 HSE

Its always the same no matter what the outside temp is. I have not had the Defender long, I would say the warmest has been 14 and the coldest -2.

What type of journeys do you do?

Short around town etc or motorway etc. what's your average journey time?? Current:D4 HSE

I do a mixture, but mainly to work and back which is about 5 miles

no it never drops on a run, only when its left. for instance i left it running when i washed it the other day at asda, when i started it was at normal temp blowing hot air, and by the time i got back in the temp gauge was below the blue and blowing very cold air.

Mine massively depends on the air temp. In summer it stays at normal operating temp, but this time of year as in probably below 6 degrees it will drop. Current:D4 HSE

it shouldn't Rob, the stat should close and keep the heat in the engine. take the fan off in the winter, i use to on my td5 90, great untill its about 15 degs then put back on

not sure on a puma, but they can stick on any car. there usually about a fiver so worth an ask at your garage

I'm confident mine is fine, when I lived in the alps, it reacted to the cold in the same way the company Td5 did, and even now, my mates 110 does the same as mine. If we leave them running together after the same trip, they both drop after a while, and it's a fair while, not just a few minutes and it does have to be cold. But yeah, taking the fan off would be a good idea, but normally I do Dualcarriage way driving, so leaving it on is ok.

Having the heater on takes alot of heat from the engine too. Current:D4 HSE

I don't know if this helps but I'm not sure the Puma will heat up significantly inside the cabin if left ticking over from a cold start up, it would take a loooooong time if it does and you would need air-con on or blower on. There was a few posts on this recently. My SAAB is the same you can leave it 30 mins outside ticking over in cold weather but the temp gauge will only just be off the bottom!

TIG's right, the thermostat should do it's job but if it's just ticking over is much hot water passing around the engine into the heating system as it closes down. I don't know Confused

You'll probably find that the cabin heater is able to cool the engine at a greater rate than the engine can produce heat at tick over.

My 200Tdi is the same, if you leave it ticking over for a long period of time it will cool down a bit. It won't go stone cold, but the heat extraction is likely a bit less efficient than on a Puma heater.

If the thermostat is working correctly then the main radiator, and any fan pulling air through it, shouldn't have any effect on the running temperature. The cabin heater matrix of course is permanently in the cooling loop, so that's where your heat is going. I bet if you turned the heater off the engine would stay warm for longer on the gauge.
