Honestly Matt don't use grease! On older, out of warranty Defenders with non opening screens I've often resorted to a bead of sealant over the bulkhead to screen frame seal, it works well Steve. Okay - I promise - no grease Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

The seal is just a length of closed cell foam which IIRC has a bit of self adhesive tape either side but in the past I've just used a length from a roll without the sticky tape which can be bought from extrusion / trim supplies. TBH the older they are the more likely they are to break down and act like a sponge so I can't see the harm in running a neat bead of something over the top and around the sides - just as long as it's dry underneath. Thanks - so for now I'll cover it in butyl (the blue-tacky type) - I love the stuff We had an old caravan which sprang a leak in Croatia. All I had to do was scrape off some excess (15 year old!) butyl underneath one corner, work it a bit and stick it over the crack. It was still there a year later when we sold it Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Yes seal it, you don't want water sitting under your rubber rotting the metal away where any paint has been scraped off whilst fitting the window or into any of the frame joins! My 5 year old TD5 frame had holes in it from this . It also stops leaks, hell you just don't fit a window without sealing it You don't take the window out just run a line of sealant under the window rubber - glass to rubber, body to rubber, this IS how old style windows where fitted. The right stuff to use has already been explained by 3 people, one in the trade. It's messy but will take no longer than 1/2 an hour for the front window for instance or better still get a local window fitter to do it all for you for £100 ish . They do it sooo quickly It's all in the corrosion guide http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic10467.html Look at the Puma water ingress manual, may have to Google it, says "sealing windows, glass to rubber, rubber to body" etc etc! It's all in there, it's not hard to do, only takes a day to do it all |

I seem to have downloaded a copy where the windscreen wasn't mentioned Must check again I agree with everything you say but the OCD in me still wonders if taking it all to pieces and sealing everything on assembly (if possible) might be better However, I'm slowly being convinced to do it your way - and it's stopped raining for a while Go on, shout at me p.s. plus I'm rubbish and messy at any kind of sealing/painting - you would yourself laughing if you saw our shower tray Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
