Having decided that I need one I have the following questions to ask my knowledgeable friends.
1) As my 110 is Java Black I am thinking that Black Powder Coating would suit. In your opinion is the Powder Coating tough enough for general use?. I do accept that the top could get scuffed considering the sort of use it would be getting. 2) I need to fit my Fiamma 45 Awning to the left hand side. Has anyone done this and how?. 3) Security. I have heard that a Rack plus Roof Tent disappeared from a 110 at Billing. How does one make sure that the Rack can't just be undone and lifted off whilst one isn't looking?. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Mick Clark. |

1. Yes. I have taken mine through some very scratchy green lanes with no ill affects, it seems robust enough to me.
2. I have a Howling moon awning attached, and have used the spare holes in the rack to mount it, saving drilling any more holes. I am not familiar with the Fiamma but if it mounts to a flat surface you will be fine. 3. There is no real solution, a dab of weld on the bolts will stop the oportunist, but if they want it, they will ahve it. Make sure its covered by your insurance. Ben 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Last pic will always stick with me Tim. Camping so close to alive minefield .
Rather than powdercoat why not anodise it? It'll never chip then. 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

1) I constantly carry 5 to 7 skis and the ski blades are touching the rack sometimes. The powder cating seems to stand very well this kind of abuse.
2) Sorry no awning so no idea 3) I installed the rack myself and it took me some time to attach it on the roof. I think for two men less than 5 minutes and the rack is gone. As Ben said if they want it they will have it. Just make it more difficult for them. Mike |

I had the same worries re my hannibal rack. But got mine second hand so can't help with questions 1 & 2 sorry but for 3 I used shear nuts. I only have 2 on there at the moment as wanting my rack either powder coated black or anodised. Once it's done it will become a permanent fixture so all 8 bolts will have shear nuts on. I took one off with a pair of mole grips but it took just over half an hour and my knuckles were in a right state once I'd finished!
They were pointed out to me by an engineering mate whom I asked to make locking nuts for mine. As people say if they want it they will have it but for only a couple of £ from eBay it will hopefully put them right off. Just do an eBay search for shear nuts. Hope that helps at all, Thor |

if you are going to powder coat, make sure all the hex nuts are tight and get them coated in-situ ! saves from the rain-stain effect.

talk to karl at patriot - they can do you a set of security bolts but it needs a specific tool - each set is unique from memory.

Many thanks for all your replies; they have all been very helpful.
So, Powder Coat is O'K, Fiamma Awning can be fitted to Rack and Security bolts to help keep it there. Job Done! Thanks, Mick Clark. |
