England 2005 Defender 110 Td5 XS CSW Cairns Blue
In one year/15k miles of my ownership (49k miles in total on a nearly 7 year old truck)

On the engine specifically, then just a MAF, although I think either the MAP or Ambient pressure sensor need attention too. Expecting oil the loom/ecu eventually Shocked

Wheel bearing
Swivel
ABS sensor Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

So far I Have:

Fuel Pressure Reg (replaced with later type)
MAF. Meter (£90)
Problem with truck going into extended throttle response mode, (yet to fix or work out problem)
I will need a new clutch soon & probably DMF... Truck has done 72K

Other problems I have:
I want a remap
I want a decat & straight through centre box (because it will sound nice with a Td5) Current:D4 HSE
Gone: BMW Z4MC
Gone: Defender TD5 90 CSW
Previous: Discovery TD5 ES (Gone)

Last sunday the timing chain snapped on my td5 Sad its only done 60,000 miles when i stripped it found that on the fixed chain wear pad the bottom bolt wasent long enough and was just sat in the hole but couldent come out so thats what im on with over the christmas period!

Recently chopped in my ten-year-old 110 TD5 for a new Puma. And yes, I do regret it! The chassis was rusted but knowing what I know now I should’ve rebuilt it on a galvanised one and kept it for another ten years.

During that time, with 150,000 miles, just “normal” service items plus water pump, clutch and flywheel and clutch master and slave cylinders (the latter bad maintenance more than anything, the fluid hadn’t been changed and was like treacle).

BUT, the original (Avon) tyres were rubbish, changing them to decent ATs was the difference between night and day. And then, boy oh boy did it eat rear half-shafts! I lost count of how many had to be replaced…

Shocked I dont like this thread Laughing so far Ive only had issues shutting the doors in really cold weather, and a weeping clutch master cylinder - nothing I cant live with.

I shouldn't mention a problem with the TD5 suddenly revving it's head off then Stoker Shocked

I don't know the cause of this but have heard and read about it. I know also of someone who had it happen to them on the M25. She was driving along and the engine revs went through the roof, she pulled over onto the hard shoulder and could do nothing until the engine blew up Shocked Think I would have tried to stall it somehow! The vehicle was an 02 plate and was at Andys, AJS4x4 for a while awaiting a new engine... She was divorced soon after the incident but I'm sure it wasn't her fault Rolling with laughter They did fight over the Defender, she won but he kept his Subaru and bike Whistle

there are 2 throttle maps from what i've seen. when low range is engaged it makes the throttle real long in order to deploy the power slower and stop from breaking things. If your has a long pedal then try it in low range, if its alot quicker to respond then the switch terminals are on backwards!

swap them round on the TB.

Is that something to do with a blocked DPF or it not getting hot enough to work and diesel being tracked back into the engine and raising pressure or something? Could be completely off the mark here, anyone?? 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top

The TD5 isn't fitted with a DPF, but it wouldn't cause this problem even if it was. Diesel engines running away to destruction is what happens when they consume their own oil. Typically, this is because of very worn turbo seals, although worn piston rings can have the same effect.

It's hardly what you'd call a common problem though, and neither is it a particular TD5 problem. It can happen to any diesel engine, although in the grand scheme of things, it rarely does anymore. Darren

I was told by my garage that the TD5 has a different oil pick up and as such couldn't run away becuase of failed turbo's.

I managed to drive mine (albeit slowly) up the Col de l'Iseran (2800m High) afyer the turbo blew, and at no point did it start to run away. 2002 Defender 110 DC

Td5s can run away due to a number of things ie turbo failing and dumping oil into the inter cooler etc. But td5 injectors are under the rocker cover, so if a injector body or o ring is leaking it can fill the sump with fuel if this happens it can get trough the breather and the turbo pumps the fuel/oil mix into the intake with air and this can rev it's nuts of until it destroys itself and runs out of it's fuel source. I've seen a few truck engines when they have ran away and it destroys everything, injector nozzles smashed pistons picked up rocker bridges smashed and bounced off.
