There’s pressure within the trade to increase the interval between MOT’s to two years, studies are already being made to see whether or not it’s feasible…
BUT, there’ll be absolutely no “discretion” allowed on the part of the testers. The failure pattern, advisories etc. are already carefully monitored by VOSA, I know a tester who’s been cautioned for being below the “average” of failing cars because of faulty bulbs: “But if it’s a simple bulb blown, we change it (mind you, one wonders at a customer who didn’t at least check the lights before taking his car for an MOT)” “Absolutely out of order, you must fail the vehicle, then change the bulb, then re-test” “If we did that, we’d have no more customers” “Tough” Even sillier, the emphasis is very much going to be on emission levels. Like it or not, NO politician who wants to stay in office is gonna go against the tree-huggers… Peter |

Not "quite" correct it seems, 2012 MOT Inspection Manual, Part 1.7 (Headlamps) states: Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system. Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given. Headlamp washers may work in conjunction with the windscreen washers (when the dipped beam headlamps are switched on) or by a separate switch. |

Presumably fixed, the tester manual is listed as "proposed" but is described as 4th edition with an ISBN number.
All of the MOT manuals are to be found here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/publications/ma...guides.htm There do seem to be some ambiguities especially with regards to headlamps. IIRC Construction and Use (Type approval) regulations state that HID and possibly LED headlamps shall have washers and self levelling fitted, whereas the MOT handbook says may. However http://www2.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps.html states

“EU legislation… 13 pin trailer sockets are to be electrically tested but 7 pin ones only checked for secure fitting”
Less EU legislation and more that 13-pin caravanners are likely to have 240V equipment installed. Makes sense to check earth returns 11 and 13. Peter |

@Birdy - don't see the relevance to whether the towed trailer, caravan, horse box or whatever is fitted for 240v or not. The 13 pin socket is for 12vdc circuits only. Pins 11 and 13 are the 12v earths for fridge and battery charging respectively.
The MOT check for the 13 pin trailer socket only covers the lighting circuits.
Shame they aren't testing the functioning of 7 pin sockets as well. |

I didn’t realise it was just the lighting circuits to be checked: we’ve all experienced the strange things happening to our trailer’s lights when there’s a rusted earth contact - brake lights flashing instead of indicators etc. - but they’re only 12V circuits. I wondered the consequences of 240V equipment running off an inverter being poorly earthed.

They've probably left out 7pin sockets out bcause there was a change to the "reccomended" note the use of that word, towards the end of the 90's. All the wiring for the 7pin stuff in not set in stone, it only follows guides, as long as it works on your trailer then that's all that matters. Don't you remember years ago picking up a borrowed trailer and just giving up using the lights on the thing

Rubbish! It is crystal clear! If your Landy runs on petrol you're stuffed! Diesel not being 'petrol ignition sparked' you're ok! I feel that the issue of cats is going to run and run despite it being quite clear! It has been covered at least twice before in some detail. Look at the link below and follow the link in my first post on this thread to the original thread.... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic9379.html?highlight=decat If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
