First i bought a cheap one. Something like this one. I bought myself 50 pounds of frustration. It produces an incredible amount of heat, makes noise and your battery is providing the energy to produce the heat. I don't think it got any colder inside. After that i had a little bargain and bought a Weaco for somewhere around 200 pounds. It's capable of freezing redbull in 4 or 5 hours. I'm really pleased with it. It uses almost no power from your battery. The standard defender battery is perfectly capable of providing the power over night in the mids of summer and your still able to start in the morning. |

What wouldn't I have again?
Coleman 240v / 12v / gas fridge - total waste of money, ran the battery flat, poor on gas, ok on 240v. Sold it on ebay and bought an Engel which has been faultless. In fact we have two of them (one for food and one for beer) 
Bush wires - had them already fitted to my 300tdi and never used them. NAS rear step - sold mine as the tow bracket at a fixed height didn't work for me. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

Oh, yes we have tried the 12 v cool boxes as well. Not impressed with it, sat in garage for a few years before being sold to our plumber who was only going to use it on day trips out fishing.

I'd concur with that. My 110 had one fitted when I bought it and, at the time, I thought 'ooh, that's smart'. However, I've since replaced it with a Dixon Bate as it's far more flexible. We bought the Engel 45 fridge years ago and it has been used extensivly. We don't have a split charge system so bought the Engel battery cut-out switch which means that when the battery charge drops below 11 volts the fridge switches off. This has never happened despite staying on some campsites for up to three or four days. As long as you take a run out somewhere the battery will be kept topped up.
Also the fridge is very useful this time of year, in the garage, plugged into the mains as the main fridge in the house gets stuffed full of food for Christmas. Mick |

Mick has just stated one of the reason why we prefer the ARB!
OK on face of it the ARB is more expensive then the Engel. Buy the Engel £700 AND the battery monitor £90 and the hinge lock at £6 makes the ARB look cheap at £760. The ARB has all those inbuilt and is also 20% bigger. Admittetly the ARB fridge cover is about £15 dearer then the Engel 
As for the insulation value of the covers I am NOT 100% convinced about them. However for protecting the fridge yes I am convinced. Both of the covers on our Engel and ARB fridges look a bit manky now now but both fridges are still in reasonable condition. Both fridges have been extensively used in our vehicles The Engel is currently sat in our lock up with the turkey in whereas the ARB is in the kitchen with ice cream in. If you want the female take on either of these fridges talk to Barbara. The male take is that you can get more cans of beer in the ARB

Yes I did buy the insulating cover. I think mainly to protect the fridge but also was told it made the fridge work better, therefore less strain on the battery
Brendon, yes I also bought the hinge lock as the lid was driving me mad and I bought the tray to secure the fridge. All in all the whole lot cost about £650 back in 2008. Not sure how much it would cost at todays prices but I am very pleased with the fridge and expect it to last for a long time. You can also run the fridge for at least two days on one of those portable 4 in 1 Jump Starter Packs if you needed to. Mick |

I went the Engel 45 route,, a few years ago,
First year without a cover, and borrowed a battery monitor,, after the first trip south, found i did not need the monitor, so never been bothered with one since,, The cover, as already stated is worth it, if only as protection,, Recon mine has had a fair bit of use now, not only in the 110, but also goes rallying with us, and lives in the motorhome as a extra freezer Nas bumper... again as above,, looks good, and would like another,, but just does not work if you have to tow !!! As for a mod i would not bother with again,, struggling to think of any really, ? maybe the engine remap Oh and Roof lights California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1
