2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey

How thick is the old cross member

Hi Guys

On a related topic I've just noticed that the rear step is almost pulling thru the cross member on my Puma. Now this may be because they didn't put a suitable backing plate ... or they now make the rear cross member out of tissue paper!

Seriously how this is this metal.. don'r have my old TD5 to compare but the rear coss member is way thinner than the rest of the chassis. Seems way too thin and is related to the jack problem.

So much for a hard, industrial vehicle!. Starting to be more and more disapointed with the new fender. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Mark.I think the rear step his mounted on riv nuts. 2.4 90 XS

My 2007 was the same, the rear step bolts were just pulling though the bottom of the crossmember.

Mine doesn't feel particularly strongly attached either. Does anyone have a solution? Re-attaching it with stronger bolts? Remove it all-together?

Presumably re-attach with a spreader plate One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

Yep looks like rivnuts. The cross member is 2mm thick and IMHO the rivnuts are not used in a very sensible fashion. The flange of the nut is on the bottom so all that you have on the interior is the bulge of the rivnut. This would be fine in a sheer application but not in a straight pull out as is the case for the step. HAve they always been like this? My old TD5 didn't have a rear step... think I'll give this one the flick and make a proper step/rear bumper/wheel carrier.

Sure hope the tow pack is properly mounted!

So was mine - infact it pulled enought to leave a gap and went in and fixed under warranty. Ill see if i can find a pic or 2.

The problem is the pillar jack has now been removed in favour of the bottle jack...now i happen to have both and cant use the pillar on the rear anyway, but ignoring the std concern, my concern is those of us with NAS spec pumpers which use those holes as 2 of the main 4 restraint bolts. Mike

Hi there,

My defender come back on friday with the crossmenmer jacking point repaired. Looks quite well and as I saw, they reinforced all the points to do not have the problem again.

Regarding the rear step, mine also uses rivnuts that was taking away in a rough road some time ago (very weak in my opinion). I change it by a normal bolts with a spreading plate to do not damage the cross member.
