Thinking of buying a 50ltr weaco to replace my old but trusty Minus 40 60ltr as I want something a little smaller now all the kids have grown up and left.

But why are they so bloody expensive!! [not just from you, but in general]

I can get a 'kin huge fridge/freezer combined for the kitchen at half the price of the cheapest above Crying or Very sad

Im convinced that yet again its price for maximum profit rather than costing ... Evil or Very Mad
They would probably double or triple their sales if they were priced better........... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

That made me laugh......you're not wrong.... However, I'd prefer pay £xxxx for overland goods than less for the home Thumbs Up

Our latest fridge is a 32 litre Waeco, (the model number is something 35 though its 32 l) it's ideal for two people. It was £500 new from an ebay seller called aliandjoe or ali&joe whatever the spelling. It also came with mounting plate and full insulation (included in the price). 40 litres seem to be the "de facto" size that a lot of people seem to want, but if you've never had a firdge before, its quite hard to know what size you need which I'm sure is a reason a lot go for 40. It's easily beig enough for ood and beers, other drinks for a few days at which point we just top it up anyway. It's a case of take a beer out, put one in. It's also a lot smaller dimensions wise than larger fridges, which is handy for storage space in the vehicle.

I think the 50ltr is 550 at MPS

I would prefer a National Luna but really can't justifie the cost of one of them

Hi Dave-H, honestly I do not know the answer to your question about why they are so expensive.

Of the 4 fridges listed we stock and sell the ARB 47 litre for £760. Now I know some other suppliers sell yhis particular fridge for `£900. Personally (YES you could argue I am biased) I believe that the ARB 47 is best value for money when you consider its size and features. One thing I can assure you at that price we are not making a fortune but we are trying to be competitive with other makes and suppliers.

Now is it a case of slightly more expensive production cost, 12 V DC AND 240 v AC, compared to just 240v AC for standard fridges. More expensive compressor which can withstand a lot more vibrations and yawl etc? Remember standard advice after moving a fridge is to let it stand for 2-12 hours. Smaller production runs?.

To be honest I can not give a definitive answer to your question. If I could find as good and cheaper fridge then the ARB 47 then I would happily stock it after we had given it a good work out.

As for branding goods out of factories, the EZ tyre deflator is a trademark off the Burkey Manufacturing in the States. We supply it in the UK branded as Currie for £36. I know another supplier supplies it under a different brand name for £64. Yes there are slight differences in the packaging but £28 worth??

I know that Brendan, you're one of the best value suppliers out there Cool

I just wish manufacturers would price them more realisticaly to start with ........ best part of a grand for a travelling fridge is bloody silly, and puts them way out of the price range for your average punter Crying or Very sad Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Hi Mike,

We bought our Waeco CDF25 from them also 'Midland Chandlers' they are just down the road in Braunston, great shop.

Back on topic,

My Defender came with a bonnet mounted spare I think it looks great with the tent on top and 2 spares but it is getting removed because it rattles the bonnet and makes it heavy to lift.

Also came with 1.22 ratio gears in the Defender transfer case, these are really noisy and drive me nuts. I think there are quieter gears available now.

Dave-H I tend to agree with you. If I could buy a GOOD fridge cheaper and sell it cheaper I would.

I have had a quick look at the Waeco 50 which is a 49 litre fridge (that is a personal bug bear of mine why not call it a Waeco 49) yes the price varies dramatically on this fridge from about £569 to £844!

OK on a brief look at spec the Waeco is 18 kg whereas the ARB is 22 kg for a smaller fridge! Waeco is a plastic shell is steel. Is that enough to account for a 4kg difference. My gut feeling is no so where is the extra weight?

Power consumption of waeco is 45 watts or about 3.6 amps

Average current draw of ARB 47 is 0.9 amps.

Big difference in current draw which is in my mind an important consideration

Yes it can be difficult comparing different products as different manufacturers tend to use different ways of presenting figures.

I probably should have keep quiet about my cool box debacle, but at least the fridge topic (or is that off topic) is getting a good airing Very Happy

Some really useful info which will make choosing one next year a lot easier - hopefully anyway.

Keep it coming guys.

There was/is a comparison in a recent LR magazine so it will be interesting to re visit that, I have to say the high price has put me off a bit but being in manufacturing I can see how that could happen, small runs, better components etc as already mentioned.

On a positive note, I am now (note: just me) extra sure that I won't fit roof lights, bush cables, a winch or an unstable Hi-Lift (whatever one of those is). Also don't regret getting a soft-A-bar that can't take a winch. Will be fitting window grilles soon and I know I won't regret it as they are purely functional. The snow-cover is currently stopping snow from getting in and the raised intake...okay, so that's a bit naff (like it's owner).
Matt

Me too! Interesting that the roof lights light-up the bonnet and cause glare (prob worse on a light colourred Defender?).

Snow cover (I live in Aviemore - a ski resort - for a lot of the year), and driving lights (driving up single-track roads out in Northern Scotland in winter, with deer throwing themselves at your car) are still on my list of probable upgrades Thumbs Up

I fitted roof lights (and a snow cover) for the same reasons and have found them to be very useful whilst out shooting those damn deer in the hills. No probs with light glare from bonnet. I also use the wagon for getting to and from the town which I'm sure is unacceptable as I also have a winch and RAI fitted. Hi DJ, please remember that product reviews in magazines can be very selective in what they review.

I can think of two recent reviews in magazines and my first thought was why had they not include item X or item Y. In both these reviews I would have put item X or Y very close to the top if not at the top.

So question why were they not included? Reviewer not aware of them/forgot about them? Possible, I forgot about the Waeco fridge earlier Embarassed

Influenced by advertisers?

Read them, yes. Do your own research YES

Consider your NEEDS first and foremost within the limitations of your budget. When considering your needs consider your short term needs, medium term and long term. I all you will do is a in convoy trip to Morocco for 2 weeks, hire a fridge, use a cooler. If planning on more frequent trips/longer trips consider a good fridge which will meet your needs.
