Hi all,
My M57 doesn't have the coolant in the expansion tank warm up at all and the engine is using oil. Any ideas? I would have thought after a long drive the coolant should be hot? |

Thanks Mo,
I paid ~£24k for "Supply and fit full automatic 6 speed BMW M57 conversion £22,675.00 + VAT 300bhp Inc. quality used BMW M57 engine (fully serviced at **** – major overhaul), quality used automatic gearbox, full crate conversion kit, BMW shifter, airlock, console, upgraded intercooler, full exhaust, EGR blank and swirl flap delete" Would like to have thought the engine wouldn't be in the condition it's in. Plus the airlock for the difflock actuation they hadn't fitted it due to being "unreliable" only heard that after picking the vehicle up. They now have said they are happy to fit at an extra charge. |

That's alot of £££ but it does easily add up in parts alone.
Diff lock actuator off air, what's the problem with it? Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop Last edited by jst on 18th Feb 2025 7:56pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Having a bit of an issue with the garage that did the conversion. Not resolved yet. The garage said they sent me an old quote by accident but will put the airlock centre diff out of goodwill. I’m a bit puzzled they said that as there was 2 weeks from quote to having deposit including a couple of emails stating what was being done for the price etc.
hopefully will hear back this week. Not sure if I trust them to do it now if I’m honest. Had thought about getting legal with them as their attitude on emails isn’t good. Will update more when I hear back. |

A little update...
A little excerpt from their reply " the engines we select do get tested prior to installation, the term overhauled is appropriate for the amount of work carried out on the donor engines here, we replace all essential gaskets, idlers, pulleys, ancillaries etc, anything it'll need to ensure a lasting conversion. We do not however delve into the internals of the engine as this would then be a reconditioned or rebuilt engine at a different cost. The engines are used, and as such will burn some oil, this is the nature of engines and there is a huge range of variables to consider, including towing usage. If an engine is working harder than usual, oil burning or use is to be expected. We inspected the bores of your engine and no excessive wear was recorded, an easy test to see engine wear on the internals is a blow by test – which you can test yourself, leave the engine running and remove the oil cap, gently place it back on. A severely worn engine will blow the cap off as it pressurises the oil galleries. I noted yours being a particularly good engine to use as a donor, and a very clean example at that." I have never had an overhauled machine run through my company have such little done such as the reply. In fact I would say Overhauled and reconditioned are fairly similar in statements? Am I wrong? |

Overhauled change the easy bits, reconditioned change everything that can wear. Cheers
