The clunking noise you’re hearing is often a result of worn bearings within the half shafts or the differential. If there’s play in the bearing that supports the axle, it can lead to slack in the drivetrain, causing a clunk every time torque is applied or released. This is especially common in vehicles with high mileage or heavy use like your Defender. In addition to the bearings, the U-joints or CV joints in the drive shafts can also wear out over time, causing clunking. These joints connect the shafts to the rest of the drivetrain, and if they’re worn or loose, they can add to the noise you’re hearing when shifting.
