Sorry guys. I have been MIA for a while.

I'm very happy to see so many posts about the same issue - even though I'm saddened by a brilliant car being ruined in a large way due to one issue - which never used to be there on the ones before 25MY.

It is truly incredible that all these cars pass quality control from factory. Surely one would expect JLR to have measures in place to test a few cars in a batch at least. Seems like it's either not being done or even more shockingly, being missed by quality control.

To add on a point from earlier, I can confirm D250 also has the exact same issue. Basically - all new Defender Diesels are doing it (have not driven petrol 25MY yet). So I would assume it does not have anything to do with torque being too high for the ZF transmission to handle as the D250 has 570N.M which is less than 24MY D300.

I hope that with testing, JLR dealers are finding this thread and attaching it to their communications with head office technical - it would be the logical thing to do.

Everyone, please keep posting as a lot have you have been saying - the more response we get the higher the likelihood of a fix from JLR.

I will continue monitoring and advise if/when I hear of a technical bulletin being released regarding this.

Just an update. My D350 is going to the dealer on Wednesday for a software update that apparently may fix this issue. So, it seems that they are now more aware of the issue and looking for a solution.I will post an update to let you know if it worked. Let's hold thumbs.

I hope it does work. They tried twice to sort my rejected D350.

First attempt lists as ‘carry out a 2F adaptation drive cycle’. The second attempt lists as ‘run a gear box calibration as required’. None of these resolved it.

It also went to JLR Tech for the solution on both occasions and the dealer had to wait a few days for any suggested solutions.

I’m hoping there is a solution before my replacement arrives! Shocked MY25.5 Defender 90 D350 X Dynamic HSE - Maximus

six13, I'm looking forward to your update.
If it does resolve the issue, please would you mind asking your dealer for the bulletin reference number so we can all share with our dealers? Like discobean also mentioned.

Crossing all fingers and holding thumbs!

This was one of the many issues I had with my recently rejected D350. I likened it to when I was a new driver many years ago with my fiesta and a dodgy clutch!

The first technician couldn’t find a problem, the second, more experienced technician who was trying to solve the rolling back in ‘d’ issue resolved the dodgy gear change by reprogramming each gear one by one. Not sure how he did this but he said it took hours. It did actually solve the poor gear changes! Shame they couldn’t fix the rolling back so I still rejected the car.

I’m having this issue with my d350, it nearly ripped back into the bollard in my work car park trying to drive away. What was the fix? Mike

Unfortunately, it didn't fix the issue. Not sure what they did but they updated a bunch of software. They also topped up the gearbox oil as suggested. But the issue is still there. As you said it is so annoying as this is the only issue I have with the car. I have learned how to manage stops and traffic light stops - but one shouldn't have to do that.

So back to square one!

Dealer Visit

For info I don't use Hill Hold

Took a tech out to show home the issue of rolling forward in
R and backwards in D.

Explanation

Gear box slippage and perfectly normal apparently.

Work around

Press the break firmly down, this artificially puts on hill hold for 3 seconds whilst you manoeuvre away or change gear and move in the opposite direction.

Not overly thrilled but if that's the design and common way of driving this box, what can I do

Hill hold/auto hold is a red herring. As soon as you touch the accelerator this is deactivated.

The issue is that the vehicle takes itself out of gear (even in Drive), so takes a second to go back into gear. During this time, hill hold is off and the vehicle is effectively in neutral.

I have a contact at JLR head office and they have raised this to the appropriate team.

My thoughts are that the fix it will be released as a remote software update at some point.

Unfortunately that solution didn’t work on mine. It still rolled back on hills however hard I pressed on the brake.
The usual response of ‘normal they all do that’. …….. Not all of them do and the one I test drove to compare didn’t either. Just hope my new one that has a build date of today doesn’t have the same problem! Whistle MY25.5 Defender 90 D350 X Dynamic HSE - Maximus

Such nonsense. It's not normal at all. No other automatic vehicle I have driven does that, not even the cheapest of them.

Must be a flaw in either the software or the torque converter.

The gearbox/clutch disengages totally which should not happen.

Its not normal, it didnt do it in my last one and some dont do it at all.

Talking about hill hold is missleading, as you dont need that on.

No automatic rolls. None of my automatic land rovers roll when in drive Mike

Took delivery of our D250 110 beginning of December. Done 4000km on it since, and the issue with rolling backwards and torque converter hesitant to engage is the only complaint. Today I was waiting at a traffic light on a slightly noticeable incline, it switched to green, and when I moved my foot from brake to accelerator pedal, the car was slightly rolling back, rear camera was engaging and the parking sensors began to ring because they sensed the car behind. This is pretty annoying.

I just set my hopes on an upcoming OTA Update, because this is so ridiculous.
