Thursday's journey home from work in my 2005 TD5 110 I was accompanied by the three amigos, who brought some friends along in the shape of.....
No fuel gauge, no speedo or odometer no stereo and the air-con fan (internal) running very slowly despite being switched off.... Everything else seemed to work. Thought I heard a "buzzing sound" from the rear.... Since learnt that this could be a wheel sensor? Following day I had "crank no start" Nanocom said "fuel pump drive open"... I dont know if thisis a new fault, but I've been nursing a fuel pump relay base problem for a while... Re-seat the relay and all is well normally for a few weeks or so ... .... Restart and three amigos had gone but reappeared a short time into my next trip, they were intermittently on and off for the 10 mile journey... Had to stop for half an hour, restart was with intermittent three amigos after a 10 mins we had air-con fan on slowly and now with battery /sulphur smell... Luckily we were not to far from where I could leave the Defender with the battery disconnected and borrow the company van... Apologies for the story book, but I thought the more information the better ![]() So where do I start?.... Forum search suggests check the earth points, I can do that and look for obvious damage, but beyond that I'm a bit stuck. Any suggestions from the electric system wizards? ![]() PS I don't like electrics much ![]() |

Thanks for the replies..
Not much time to work on this yesterday... But I can say the battery is less than 18 months old and has been looked after... And checks out with a battery tester. Alternator is the factory unit, so coming up 20 years old 🤔 No oil in loom, and the earth points under the driver's seat are checked and good. I'll continue with the earth point checks, but having just completed a refresh of the whole vehicle I'm confident they are ok. |

Sulphur smell from battery tends to be an over charge. So possibly your alternator is not regulating its output. And I question if with a high voltage that other items may be shut down as protective thing by the ecu????
Can you test your alternator output? |

I will check the voltage across the battery whilst driving, probably using Nanocom....once Ive completed my earth point checks...is there any other way to check alternator output?
