When I spoke to admiral about modifications they said anything physical or electrical that wasn’t present when the car was manufactured. The definition of electrical wasn’t defined, but if they treat a engine tune as electrical I’m sure they’d treat other modifications as electrical - provided they’d look for them and then cross reference it back to the build of the car, some energy but cheaper than a 60-80l payout.

Well, that's what l was thinking. lt wouldn't be the time to find out. l am sure the "get out of paying" department are well aware of these forums and may even monitor them, although it would be difficult to identify actual owners as the details are not public.

Agreed I guess it depends on the value of payout. I decided this year to declare a tune on my Ftype because of the risk of saving a few hundred quid on insurance outweighed the risk of investigation after an accident.

I am not familiar with UK insurance regulations but I do want to clear up what it is that CCF editing does vs a (true) electronic modification such as a remap.
Editing the CCF is akin to making a change in the settings menu in the Pivi. The difference is that Land Rover does not provide the settings menu to CCF settings - these must be provided with an outside tool (and, on a tangent, AFAIK the only 2 systems that enable this are LR's Pathfinder system and the IIDTool. The others on the market are Chinese copies of LR software). So everything you are activating on the vehicle by editing the CCF was already installed ex-factory. A remap on the other hand constitutes flashing modified or new software to whatever ECU is to be changed: a engine remap, transmission remap, etc. This SW did not leave the factory already installed on the vehicle and a remap does alter the vehicles performance parameters to a state outside of that which LR certified for the Defender's production. I disagree with Admiral's blanket assessment of "anything that wasn't present". Imagine, for instance, that LR had the different performance levels of the D200, 250, 300 and 350 as CCF settings. The SW would have been present ex-factory, but any reasonable person would agree that gong from 200 to 350hp would constitute a modification. IMHO, CCF editing does not constitute an insurance relevant vehicle modification as there is no CCF setting that, on its own (w/o the addition of physical parts) modifies the performance parameters of a vehicle. Even things such as Dynamic Mode as this does not alter the vehicles performance per se but simply alters how the vehicle's controls react to driver inputs. Tesla, for instance, allows similar changes in the standard vehicle settings menus. But as I said above, I am not an expert on UK vehicle insurance. ![]() RRC 2Dr, RRC 4Dr, P38, and 2 L322s, 2 FL1s and a L663 on the way |

Good insights. Does a dealer update overwrite the ccfs?

Not in my experience. Even when they were adding my trailer hitch module, and making changes. My changes all remained. |
