Hi Dinnu
That was my first thought but I hadn't checked before I posted the orginal quesiton. I have since checked the fluid and that was low. I did top up and then attempted to bleed the clutch and initially, I got old dirty fluid out, the master cylinder seems to have stopped drawing in liquid and makes a squelching noise. Also noticed during the up/down of the clutch pedal, the return spring had snapped on one side - which also won't help matters. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

New master cylinder and LOF clutch spring on order.
All I get now when bleeding the clutch is the sound of air escaping from the bleed nipple and then fluid level does not drop. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Start doing thumb exercises and maybe take a few thumb steroids. Fitting the LOF clutch spring taught me the importance of thumb strength

Swerving the topic to LOF clutch spring fitting, of which there are a thousand posts on this forum, one thing I found made the whole ordeal easier was to bend one of the spring retaining tabs out about 45 degrees to make the spring easier to locate, then bend it back once it's all together.

I have the pedal box assembly out at the mo so I can replace the clutch master cylinder.. I am hoping its easier to install with the pedal box on the bench. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Finally got the LOF spring fitted. It took quite some time trying to do it in the car. -
Master cylinder also fitted and bled. Engine off, I can get gears but with engine running gears are a struggle to be able to be engaged, with some effort I can. I can get a bite, but its really close to the floor I have just go a new slave cylinder. Before all this kicked off, I could get gears ok but the bite did seem a bit lower than usual. More bleeding? Replace the slave ? New clutch ? Check bank balance? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Found the post
https://www.defender2.net/forum/post855167.html My pedal is about 160mm - level with the brake pedal almost. I think I will have to adjust this. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Ensure you have a bit of free play in the pedal. When you look through the pedal box cover, with the master dust cover off, the push rod should not be touching the piston inside the MC. This to ensure proper functioning of the non return valve.
Did you get power master? That has smaller bore, smaller displacement of fluid, and so slave will move less distance…. Might not be enough to release clutch. From what you say, seems like you still have air, or possibly a problem with the flexible hose between bulkhead and slave on passenger side. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
