Thanks.
So I assume that is only UK registrations, not actual sales or numbers built? |

At that rate it’s 90 vehicles this year in the Uk !!!! At best that’s £7m worth of sales. I’m aware the UK is not seen as the main market for the Grenadier . However that number is very very low and if it’s at a similar scale in the prime markets for the Grenadier then they will struggle to survive.

And Land Rover said that the "old" Defender was not a viable proposition at about 17,000( can be corrected here) vehicles sales per year. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Viable is such a subjective and contentious word though... if low volume is not viable you wouldn't have companies like Caterham or Lotus either.
I have no idea how well or badly the Grenadier is selling, nor what Ineos' realistic targets are for the vehicle. Ultimately it only needs to be profitable to be viable, world domination and record sales are not a requirement for this. |

its just another vanity project from a man with more money than sense judging by his other actions........
most likely any losses are simply a tax side-step anyhows......... |

I think it is well documented that JLR had other agendas.... viability is also a contentious word. All you have to do is look at how many Wranglers and Bronco's are sold in the USA each year. Circa 150,000 - 200,000 for each model. Toyota also sell a lot of 4x4's. Clearly there is a market for such vehicles. As so many car makers sell and make 4x4's successfully. |

I thought that the "old" Defender was a good image maker for Land Rover. They could have looked at the manufacturing cost of the Defender as part of their advertising budget. None of the current line up would tempt me in to the fold but I do see lots of people driving current Land Rover vehicles and who would not have bought the "old" Defender but it was the Defender that made the image. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Lotus has been on its knees for years. There doesn't appear to be many months go by without talk of redundancies. They have just had another clear out. Most people who live in Norfolk will know someone who has been laid off by Lotus at some point or another. Only this week, it was reported that Aston Martin has record losses and is also laying off staff. I'm not sure Aston Martin ever has made a profit? These two marques have one thing in common. Wealthy owners. With Sir Jim's retro-chem business looking rocky, I don't think the Grenadier has that luxury? Lotus would have been gone years ago if it hadn't been for foreign investment bank rolling the organisation. The same can be said for Aston Martin, but I have no idea who the previous owners were after David Brown. He made money building tractors, not cars. It was his tractor business that allowed Aston Martin to build cars. |

Yes Procta, I saw one a couple of weeks ago. No idea what it is called and it had weird bodywork which made it look damaged.
It has been reported tonight that Lotus have sent their production staff home. They are giving excuses about changing production but seriously, who sends all of their staff home? The local newspaper also commenting on the number of redundancies in the last few years. As for the Volvo looking car, why? Lotus make sports cars not SUV. Are there not enough people trying to do that already? A troubled company. Coming from Norfolk it would be a sad day if they ever did close up. |

Those are CAR registrations, if you add the Commercial vehicles it's still not great. You've got to wonder how much the production halt affected those numbers and when vehicles started to arrive at the dealers again after the Recaro seats problem. It will be interesting to see what the March figures are. Production is running, it's a new registration month and the last month before the new tax year, with all the tax hikes due in April. Come to think of it, the rest of the year after April is going to be tough for the whole industry. January, Cars 11, Commercial 25, Total 36 February, Cars 4, Commercial 22, Total 26 |
