Wiper behaviour erratic - mind of their own - 200TDi 110..
Folks,

I need help from the brain trust pls…

Putting my wipers on intermittent, works fine for about 2 mins, then they automagically just keep wiping.. and I can’t turn them off until I either leave them in the off position for 3-4 mins or turn the ignition off.

I’ve replaced the stalk, the relay and everything I can think of.. it’s got to be electrical ..

Any pointers or ideas … pls ?

Thanks

Thanks htb2 - think the dash is coming off this weekend, I’ll check that out. So I’m assuming if that was flaky, even if the stalk was set to off.. it’d still try returning to ‘level’ and would keep going until the park switch was triggered…hmm

Makes sense - thanks

Posted this elsewhere, but ‘cut and paste’ is easier on this device.

“Off the wall suggestion, but….

Take a look at the drive gear spindle, where it comes through the top of the motor housing. There should be a circlip there, to stop the gear floating in/out. If the circlip disappears, the ramp on the drive gear, which is supposed to engage with the park switch, can drop back just enough to stop things working as they should.

Sounds odd I know, but I’ve had this…. twice.”

So it might not be electrical. I’ve done the whole park switch, relay, stalk thing only to find it made nod difference and then found the circlip was gone, along with the thin ‘thrust washer’ behind it.

I’ll be home later tomorrow if a photo would help to pinpoint where I’m talking about. Donald

Donald - I pulled the entire motor out this past weekend and surprise surprise... the circlip *WAS* missing.. hence the main gear was indeed moving in and out - I found one in an old box of bits and so far all is good... thanks for the pointer !

Hi Dave, good news!

I did actually take pictures yesterday, but off on my travels again early today so never got round to posting them.

It's such an odd thing - leads you to assume it's an electrical fault when it's both simple and mechanical!

Thumbs Up Donald
