Latest test as you described: https://youtube.com/shorts/erfu-yqPLgQ?feature=shared

I’m not sure how freely it should spin but I don’t hear a lot of noise from it. Clearly some rubbing but nothing rattling etc. apologies there’s obvs some noise from me pushing the wheel.

Really appreciate your help here!

Hard to tell from the video, to me it sounds like the pads touching the disc and nothing else.
What about the ball joints? Did you test them?
If they are ok my bet is still on the wheel bearings and you’ll need to pull it apart to inspect.
The duck in my front hub also went quiet after driving for a few minutes.

I’ll try the ball joints and saw elsewhere that someone had an issue with loose shock turrets… so when i jack it up again I’ll do both. Thanks

I had a similar noise coming from the front of my Honda CRV, it proved to be a pebble wedged between the brake shield and the disc and was grating on the disc…..just a thought. 2012 90SW - 2.2TDCI

Thanks - I’ll add that to the checklist… so far:
1. Check shock turrets are secure
2. Check steering ball joint movement with steering wheel wiggling
3. Check for anything trapped behind brake shield

I was out this evening and now have knocking in the driver’s footwell to add to the list. Had it for a little while but it’s got much more pronounced. Not obviously correlated with steering or bumps in the road. Has happened both when steering round a corner, reversing down a hill and when coming off the accelerator on flat. Not at the same time as the rumbling/grinding from the front right…

So on the steering joint, it looks off at an angle to me... though I'm not sure what it should look like. Photo below. This was with the wheels straight and all on the ground.

When wiggling the steering wheel I can feel it knocking inside the joint. Again I'm not sure what to expect but it felt like because it's in at an angle, part of it is hitting whereas if it was central/straight it would be free. I tried forcing it straight when holding it and with steering wiggling and it didn't knock.

Passenger side looks like this: https://youtube.com/shorts/ipD-4sejov4?feature=share

... sorry for my terminology and happy to be corrected so I can learn what these parts are called.

Back to the grinding sound over bumps… i noticed today that I only get it when the clutch is engaged and I’m giving some power via the accelerator. So if i coast over a speed bump with foot down on the clutch there’s no grinding… if I have my foot on the accelerator then the awful grinding is there… it almost feels like something in the transmission is jumping around when i go over the bump. I can’t imagine this is the steering because there’s just too much judder… though I look forward to hearing thoughts on the photo above and whether that’s yet another issue.

Propshaft joint?

Difficult to diagnose / check whilst on the floor, my front prop joint nearest the transfer box was shot, but I couldn't feel the play when parked, made some horrible noises!

Do you feel it on the accelerator pedal? My puma makes a grinding noise related to the traction control. Probably not this, but who knows Wink Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

Thanks both - I’ll find some videos re how to check this further. Can traction control be turned off or is that just stability? I’ll retry with it off anyway to see if any difference, though I think I did that a while ago to no avail.

Could be I feel it through the accelerator- will pay closer attention next time … but it’s a bit difficult to isolate given the general movement over the speed bump anyway!

I suggest checking the front diff as well.

I’ve looked at a few videos and seems like I can pretty simply check the front prop shaft and UJ for play on the ground… though I might not feel it anyway.

Is there an easy way to check the diff or that that have to be removed and disassembled to check it?

Thanks as ever.

This looks like a reasonable starting point for the diff:

Your description of the noise is starting to get very specific. Why not take it to a good shop and let them have a look.

The best way to check u-joints is to remove the shaft and check it on the bench. Otherwise it may be under tension which can disguise any issues. Failing that, first chock the rear wheels and put the front axle up on stands so that both front wheels are off the ground. Reverse the procedure for the rear shaft.
