Germany 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Fuji White
Puma 2.2 Starter only turns sporadically below 10 degrees
Hello, my name is Tobi. I come from Germany and have a problem with my Defender. Since it has winter temperatures in Germany, it has been causing problems. As soon as the temperatures are below 10 degrees Celsius, the starter always needed 1 to 1 1/2 seconds until it started to turn. Then the car started immediately and without any problems! The lower the temperatures, the sooner nothing happens, the starter does not turn at all. Sometimes I can turn the key 5-10 times and on the 11 turn of the key it turns over and it starts (no problem!) Or for several days the starter wont turn until the temperatures rise again.

I have already replaced the starter, the pre-glow control unit and all relays in the fuse box. I already had the immobiliser programmed away 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything anymore and no one in the German forum has an idea anymore. I hope someone here can help me with this damn problem.

As soon as the car is warm, it starts without delay. The starter rotates immediately as soon as the key reaches the last position. As if there had never been anything.

Otherwise, the engine runs wonderfully! Even if it should jump at sub-zero temperatures, then without problems! No unround running, no excessive smoking - nothing
It is a 2015 110 2.2 with DPF and 101.000km

The one thing you have not mentioned is the starter battery . Is it the original, if not how old is it ?

If not the battery I would check the major earths and the correctness and torque of the battery terminal clamp connections.

Oh sorry, the Battery is brand spanking new. The battery poles are clean, sit correctly and firmly. I checked every ground connection I could see and reach.

Hi... you may have been down this route , but start by monitoring the supply to the starter relay when you turn ignition to crank.. is it operating ..if it is are you getting that voltage at the starter motor solenoid ..etc etc..
If the fault is consistently there at low temp it should be possible to check each component in the chain with a meter.. and take it from there..๐Ÿ‘

Thanks, yeah I have tried that but at the actual Temps it Starts within the 1maybe 1 1/2 second window which makes that attempt really hardโ€ฆ

Yes, see what you mean , but I'd still be inclined to see if the starter relay is been energised when you turn ign to crank.. it could be done with a bit playing..with a bulb to its output and have it visible when you go to crank..
It about finding out at what point or component the system is failing at..

I now and again get the no crank, when I turn the key.. I've never established a cause .it's fairly random and not very often.. I suspect that the immobiliser isn't letting the starter relay ground...that's just a guess , but if I wanted to I would do something like I described to see if in fact the relay was getting actuated..
This all assumes you know that the power switching circut of the relay is good..

So, after I meticulously cleaned all ground points with the electric file, sandpaper, Vaseline and key files and replaced the main ground cable of the battery with a new one, the error was still there.

So I started to measure, when I wanted to measure under the speedometer on the ignition switch, the white/red cable (starter relay) came off from the ignition switch with only a light tap. So cable lug on it, pressed with the pliers and look, even at -4 degrees without even a second of delay started.

5 months ago I installed a cruise control, the wiring harness runs close to the ignition switch - I must have pressed too badly when assembling it.

Well, I book the spare parts under prophylactic maintenance.

And thanks for your input!
