Towing Electrics & Leisure Battery Charging
Evening,

It's probably a straightforward answer, but I struggle to understand this.

I have two 7-pin connectors (image attached). I believe the one don't the right is N, and the white one being S on the left.

I'm building an overland trailer and would like to charge the leisure battery while driving. The wiring kits I've seen for the build always have a chunky, thick cable going back to the alternator, as they are designed for van conversions.

Why can't I use the S connector to change the leisure battery while driving? Is it worth updating it to a 13-pin? Is there an easy way to merge the two, maybe plug and play?

My understanding is that you could, but only a small number of amps can flow down the weedy wire. I have big fat cables going to an anderson connector, but that charges 2 x 12v batteries that could be completely flat after a few days, so need more amps.

Weedy wire Rolling with laughter

That’s exactly what I was thinking, why is it so thin as it kinda makes it redundant but it was probably sufficient 10 years ago.

This is the last part of the puzzle I need to solve. I’m trying to make the overland trailer future proof and even maybe tow it with the wife’s car so I need to come up with a solution.

The trailer will have a 240v hookup and also solar, I’ll get about 5 days off the leisure battery which will probably be enough, and if we moved campsites it would get a top up whilst being towed.

I also thought the "S" was introduced to do just that and the 13pin was just a more convenient merge into one plug. There are separate ground wires that match the respective 12V wires to take care of the amps, but I wouldn't use them for more than 10A each.
