But what do they actually do other than collect mud and encourage corrosion?
I presume that, like the "nappy liners" on the inner wings, they are a feeble effort at reducing noise. |

Small bit of impact prevention probably, presumably cheaper to replace than actual panel damage.
Whilst there is mud flaps, there is still some sticks and things like that which could jab up under there. Flexi Fuel filler pipe armour would be a good idea I think, that’s something that is vulnerable. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Your rattling couldn’t be the well know issue of bonnet hinges could it??
Just a thought. |

I have the optimill hinges on there and I’m pretty convinced the rattle is beside or behind me. Sounds a lot like stones hitting arches … but it’s far too frequent and more pronounced on or after a bump in the road. Could also be something like a loose bit of metal stuck in a groove somewhere which sometimes gets the right force to move.
Checked the rear folding seat mechanisms today but no joy. Think I’ll have to figure out how to take the trim off the pillar beside me next… if anyone has a good guide to how to get the side trim off… greatly appreciated! i might also take the driver’s seat out again and see if there’s anything going on in the base. And also take the door apart and see if anything is rolling around in the base. Unbelievably irritating!! |

Have you ever heard of panel damage to the underneath of the seat box of a type that those plastic objects would have prevent? No, neither have I. |

Not sure of anything at the moment. Where are they and how can they be checked?

Rear dampers go from rear wheel arch down to axle. They can often eat the bushes at the axle causing a clonk/noise. Can be a light noise if the very bottom washers are jangling about. This noise would be occurring with road unevenness.

The upper damper can get loose with wear as well, but the lower ones are more prone to wear. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

That’s incredibly helpful - thanks. I’ll take a look in the light tomorrow. I have a separate rumbling (not rattle!) from the front right which happens consistently when hitting 20mph and then stops… I’m wondering if that’s shock/suspension related too. So this could be a good check all round

Does the rattle.stop when you brake? It is very common (especially on 110 and 130) for the rear pads to rattle.
