Hi ,
Have you checked all the mounts ( engine and gearbox )? I had a similar issue on a rumbling noise which I traced to a gearbox mount which had split. Worth checking .. Cheers, Andrew. |

If you are considering that it maybe a prop then put a couple of pumps of grease in each grease nipple and see if that alters/removes the noise.
Assume you checked wheel bearings. I’d also drop the oils out of the boxes and diffs and check what comes out. |

Re-grease the UJ’s see what happens, if it’s a bit better or a slight change then that’ll give you a clue, it could be also unbalance due to uneven greasing, or out of phase.

Thanks for the replies.
Brand new props which had been greased. Perhaps i should pump more in as suggested, i will give that a go I haven’t checked wheel bearings, no. I did think it could be the bearings, but i was waiting to see if someone also thought this could be that. Engine was rebuilt in November so the mounts should be good. Gearbox, transfer box and Diffs all oils replaced just before christmas. |

A bit "left field" perhaps, but easy enough to check for: have a look to see that the radius arms are properly attached onto the front axle, and the trailing arms to the rear.
I had a situation where I was getting a speed-related noise which I was struggling to track down. My initial thoughts were all the same as yours - props, handbrake, A frame, bearings. Then almost by chance I noticed that on the driver's radius arm, the rear most bolt was entirely missing. The car had passed an MOT the week before I noticed.... Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. I will get under the vehicle ASAP and check this.
Maybe separate, maybe not, but when driving through the gears, if i move into a gear slightly sooner than ideal (say into 5th, but then I cant accelerate because of a slow car in front, for example) and then i get a strange ringing noise.. when continuing to accelerate to find more revs. From what sounds like the accelerator pedal area within the engine bay / under the vehicle. Pretty vague description i know, but i dont suppose anyone gets what i mean do you, and what it is? Also maybe related to the rumbling, maybe not. I had the engine rebuilt 1,700 miles ago. Currently running the engine in. When driving normally, i sometimes get a wiff of burning rubber. Oil levels all spot on, coolant levels kept topped up. I did have a split plug gasket on the radiator which was spraying the engine bay with coolant, but that was sorted quickly and the coolant was kept topped up the whole time. Engine is running nicely, not strange noises. Temp gauge takes a while to get up to temp but once it is, sits there without any play. Any idea? |

Not exhaust i dont think, as i have just ensured this isnt touching anything underneath and added new rubbers.
Got drums brakes all round. Hand brake pads.. not sure, would i need to remove the outer casing to check? Would this be checked on a MOT? Passed in Nov |

Simple one….. Have you checked your tyres? I had uneven wear on the front inside edge, due to a slightly bent track rod it had caused the inside tread on both front tyres to be quite castellated. Created a real rumble at 40-50 mph. Worth a quick check maybe 👍

Propshafts may need Phasing if not already done ?
This is normally vibration around 50 on overrun |

Ah yeah i looked up the handbreak Mod, looks great but unfortunately i do not have this, would a dr handbrake rattle / ring at all?
Tyres were new less than 10k miles ago, same rumble with old set too. Propshaft - ah, whats the correct way to phase the UJ’s? Would it be that the UJs arent phased when buying a full prop with both UJ’s, Greased? |
