Terrible range in Winter
I don’t have a at home charger, so I have to go to a local car park (luckily it’s free) to charge my car. However when I wake up in the morning I see a drop in charge sometimes up to 30%. It just looks like my car is not holding its charge. I have read online that EV’s do not like the winter and the range can be affected. I probably wouldn’t notice this as much if I was charging my car over night.

Anyone else notice this?

Hello

We have just purchased a P300e Evoque and I charge this at home currently on a 3pin plug from 12.30pm to 5am

In the morning it says 31 miles, 100% (I realize its a slightly different engine / motor)

Is it full when you go to the car park to charge up? as if its only charging at a 3pin plug rate it will take a while..

I charge to full or 80% and pre-condition.

For example I may finish charge at 9pm, drive 1mile home then wake up and see the percentage drop to 65%.

Having all the features on in this weather will affect it...

Seats, wheel, etc etc

Its funny I'm on some Tesla forums and VW Buz ones as was looking at both for a swap, the range people are seeing are horrendous at the moment (like 70 miles with 50%) on the VW

People suggesting, turn the heating down, the seats off etc etc... I mean come on, I didn't have the options fitted so I don't use them.

I guess these temperatures are bad for UK (-5 today) so everything is being used more. I would wait until it warms up a bit to see if it gets better. It does sound like something is using more than it should?

Do you set it to warm up etc before you get on the car?

Will keep an eye on ours also. As for your lead I only paid £70 for the JLR granny charger off e-bay, genuine product then moved to an ev tariff, so car and batteries we have charge over night at 7.5p kwh Smile

I will have a charge point fitted as they are clever and in summer will divert the extra solar to the car Thumbs Up

When the dailies that live outside freeze over I throw in a 1.5kw electric heater to pre warm them up. Then when you drive away you have 10min until the engine heats up and it's not as if the car had warmed up sufficiently.

So on an electric car ALL heating is electric, I would think you need 3kw and an electric car battery is like 30-40 kWh?, so that's an additional 10% capacity lost per hour?

A PHEV makes very little sense if you don’t have a charger at home. The already limited range is impacted severely when the battery is cold.

All batteries reduce their capacity to hold a charge in cold weather. The colder it is the greater the reduction of charge.

EV Cars are worse because they are often stored outside so are exposed to all the extremes and the driver wants to have a warn car when driving therefore increasing the demand on the already reduced battery capacity.

A 30% reduction in charge / range in winter is not unusual, it is variable, however you will not always find owners of EV admitting the downfall of owning an EV after all they have spent a lot of money, and very few people admit their mistakes in beleiving advertising and salesmen

Currently for me an EV is a fantastic solution for the following situation:

- Small car, maybe 4 doors but really just a small car, cheap and cheerful
- New with subsidy or near-new and cheap enough to depreciate over 5-7 years
- Local use only: shopping, kids to and from school etc. Daily range no more than 20miles, maybe 50 in a pinch
- Second car (ICE) for all the heavy lifting, distance etc
- Parked at home, garage or drive, plugged into the wall socket on arrival (or solar panels if you have them)
- Needs to be able to serve as a backup power source, this might become more relevant as electricity rates become more variable and maybe unreliable.

Unfortunately it seems the focus is more towards the high end where the profits are probably higher.

Just because a PHEV Defender doesn't suit your lifestyle / requirements doesn't justify the contempt you show for people who have chosen one.

80% of my journeys are under 20km.

I live in rural France, 4x4 ground clearance is required for some of the 'roads' I often use, especially as flooding is becoming more frequent.

I need the ability to comfortably tow my 2 ton caravan when I go on holiday.

I need a vehicle with a large cargo area for my dog

New vehicles here in France with a large engine capacity incur a crippling environmental penalty in excess of 20k Euros, but Hybrids are exempt.

I have neither the room nor the desire to own 2 cars.

Now tell me a PHEV Defender doesn't make sense. Current: MY22 P400e SE
Prior: Discovery Sport HSE, Jaguar F-Type S, Discovery 3, RR Vogue

Not sure if you are replying to me, but it was by no means my intention to show contempt for what is entirely your choice. We all have different needs and as I said, for me I can see electric work as a small runabout.

You clearly have different needs, that's great thanks for sharing, it makes sense.

Maybe no one is interested in what I think or maybe someone agrees with me it's all good for me.
