Got to second drumstick's comments. Had a 90 before my 110. Running lifted and softer springs with no anti roll bars and everyone who ever drove or chased my 90 agreed it was incredibly quick but stable/predictable for a standard tune Tdi.
I was younger and more enthusiastic in them days, but you would have had to have been quite stupid to lose it, even when pushing hard at the limits..... In comparison my 110 doesn't feel quite as safe at illegal speeds or when hitting standing water on m/way, and I can't work out why. It's good, but not as good as the 90 was, despite checking and replacing many parts. Having said that, a couple of years ago while laning in mid Wales one of the group lost two tyres on one lane.... Cue a spirited drive in the 110 to the only tyre bay around with replacement tyres before they closed at midday. The stranded vehicle owner came along to pay for his new tyres and on the way I put the nearside wheels on the verge at about 70mph while passing an incoming vehicle. The verge turned out to be a bit wet and mushy so vehicle twitched a bit when I corrected. A couple of minutes later my rather pale passenger pulled his finger nails out of the dash and quietly said "F' me, if we'd done that in any of my cars we would have been off the road and upside down in the trees. You didn't even flinch!" My reply was "This one handles pretty well...." |
