There was a new petrol station in Malton last year. Not enough capacity on the local network. It ran for a few months on a big generator until capacity could be increased.
No different to the daft problems with electrical buses. |

Unfortunately the Engineers in the utility companies and the grid have been very much asleep on their watch. Politicians cannot make good decisions unless they are educated by Engineers but unfortunately too many engineers follow the short term profit for shareholders ethos of their employers and fail to deliver on their professional responsibilities. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

I think you are partially correct - but it wasn’t the engineers pulling wool over our eyes.
The head of UKPN told the UK Government their network was ready for the new electric low carbon world. In essence, they burrowed a hole under London and installed a new High Voltage ring main. As with lots of things in life (public transport?) As long as London is ok, the rest of the country will be fine. A UKPN engineer explained it to me. They never ever considered electric heating would ever be a thing other than maybe storage heaters (which were never great). Their network is like a tree. Big Coal Fired / Nuclear power station at the root. Houses at the end on the small shoots. You can’t draw large supplies through these small shoots. Another problem is solar panels creat most energy in the middle of the day when load is reasonably light. Feed in solar panels are swamping these small cables / shoots with energy no one can use (this is where battery storage becomes a thing). The world has moved really quickly. It wasn’t more than ten years ago you couldn’t pass a house with electric heating with an adequate EPC. The DNO’s network is enormous and can’t change over night even if you threw limitless money at it. Yes, these DNO’s are profiteering, it keeps them in business and keeps our pensions ticking along. Yes, the head people were ecenomical with the truth, but I suppose they are no different to any other leader (including our Prime Ministers). They have long term memory loss. Don’t blame the engineers. They know exactly where the issues are but no one wants to listen to bad news. |
