Replacement clutch box / master & slave cylinders
I have just installed a replacement clutch pedal box with a master and slave cylinder. Now it’s time to add Dot 4 and bleed the system. I haven’t done this before. Topped up the reservoir with Dot 4, got my plastic bottle, piping attached to the bleed nipple on the slave, with a bit of dot4 in.

So, pressed the clutch pedal to start bleeding, clutch pedal remained in the down position.

What do i check first?

Have you reconnected the return spring on the pedal ?

I assume Defender.

If its got the over center style return spring then you wont have a "return pedal" until the system is closed. I.e cap on bleed nipple shut.

Ideally you need two people to properly bleed it as the pedal can often be "stuck" down and need manually bringing back up.

Keep the res full.

Clutch in - open slave - close slave - clutch out

Repeat around 10 times, topping up every 3.

Should be fine. Instagram @defender_ventures

Just come back to the forum to see your comments. In the meantime i have been tinkering. System started to bleed once i released the bleed nipple (forgot that bit). So now have resistance on the pedal. However, i dont have any engagement with the clutch. Can select first, bring foot all the way off the clutch without a biting point and nothing happens…. Suggestions?

Probably isnt bled enough. Did you follow what was suggest above?

Also, assuming a Defender, did you adjust the clutch pedal?

Without floor mats and rubber cover. The pedal should measure roughly 140mm off the floor.

Adjusted via with push rod and the two lock nuts + nyloc.

Sorry if this appears rude, but did you not read up on what you doing before you did it? Instagram @defender_ventures

Hi,

I hadn't seen your advice above and was working off what i had read elsewhere. Self bleed system - bottle and pipe off the bleed nipple on slave. Purging the air out the system.

I did the above until i assumed the air had left the system, perhaps not?

Yes i did adjust the clutch before i realised i had not released the nipple, which then let me start bleeding.

Is the above not a good method?

I will go and measure the height of the clutch pedal now.

Do you think it could be a case of adjusting the height of the clutch?

Ok cool.

If you have no engagement its either not bled or badly adjusted.

The self bleed kits are ok, i have found i often need another person (in addition tonsn ezibleed) to get a full bleed. Often found myself putting around half a litre of fluid through before I got zero bubbles.

Ok, so without the rubber the clutch pedal is sat at 15cm. Im assuming it will require tightening, not loosening to reach 14cm?

There’s about 1-2cm of free play with is an improvement on my old clutch pedal. Its feels about right, nice smooth motion and stops just before the floor.

When i bled it, perhaps i didn't release the bleed nipple enough? Initially the reservoir almost emptied very quickly with a few full presses of the clutch, then after that the fluid would only drop by 5mm from 15-20 presses…

Would that indicate anything?

Thanks

If its around 15cm and you have gears then you should be fine, you can adjust if you want to.

So do you have gears now? Instagram @defender_ventures

Want to know something funny?

I suddenly realised the low/high gearstick was in neutral… clutch working fine, albeit the biting point is a little low.

Haha thanks the help!

Donut Laughing

They can be a bit of an ass the bleed. If you find the pedal changes at all over the next few days then get a friend and do a bit more bleeding! Instagram @defender_ventures
