mine did the same; when I got it opened I greased the mechanisms and it was fine afterwards. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

I have the same problem with stuck bonnet on a Puma 2007
Wire is broken and loose from handle towards front. The bonnet sits very tight and I have no idea how to open the bonnet with tools. Can someone with knowledge please PM me too. As I understand its probably the connection between the to parts of wire thats a weak point.

If you put your fingers in under the bonnet between the "D" and the "E" you can just about loop them about the cable at the mechanism and pull them forward. As a safety measure for the future loop a cable tie around the cable at the latch mechanism and let it hand down behind the grill. That way if the cable snaps you can easily pull the looped cable tie and it will pop the bonnet. Happened to me.
If you do not want to replace the cable you can leave the looped cable tie in place and use that instead. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Sorry, have to post once more. I have a Puma 2007, and it seems need a different solution to open the bonnet, when the wire is broken.

If the bonnet lock corrodes, you'll often find the plastic lever (inside) broken and the cable being still in good condition.
