Axle level and drain plug square size?
I was about to change the oil in the axles yesterday and to my surprise I wasn't able to use a 1/2" drive in the plugs. I could have sworn that I used that on previous Defenders. Is it just a matter of removing all the rust (which I did try to do) or is it another size on these? If so, what size would that be? 3/8" was too small.
Do I run any particular risk if it turns out that these are stubborn? Or is it just to apply whatever torque required?

I’m 99 percent sure they take a 1/2 inch extension bar. They’re a tapered thread I think, so I can’t see any harm in putting serious effort into undoing them, but I’m sure if there’s any particular reason not to do this someone will read this and correct me! I’m guessing that trying them when it’s all warm will help. 1983 110 automatic OM606

They are a 1/2 inch square drive, so I expect they need a good clean. A little heat around the plug won’t hurt either, nor will a sharp tap with club hammer on the 1/2 inch extension bar.

Edit. By which I mean a tap with a hammer to rotate the T bar , not to punch the plug inwards Very Happy

Just do the fill plug first so you know you can refill once drained. And think about fitting magnetic drain and fill plugs if not already fitted.

I fitted mag plugs to mine just this year, I find usually the old plugs will come out with a standard square drive ratchet, if they are really tough, you can use a breaker bar gently just for a little help to start them off, usually you don’t need to and only used for removing and definitely not refitting.
They are tapered as mentioned, there is a torque setting for them, and the LT230, which is useful to avoid over tightening especially important with the Transfer box not to over tighten because they alloy casing. No Guts, No Glory.

Thanks to all! I'll give it another try during the weekend. It is easier to proceed with confidence when backed up with this knowledge. Smile
We have a 5000 km Christmas trip ahead of us so I thought it would be nice to have this done before, but also not to immobilize the Landy due to me messing up.

Alternatively buy a short, low-cost 1/2" drive impact extension and file or grind a taper onto the male square end.

Success! At least with the axles. A good cleaning of the plugs and 1/2" square fitted.

TC on the other hand, I filled with 2 l and then it started to pour out of the filler hole. I know the filler is not a level hole. Any clues as to what is going on?
I can not guarantee that the car is level, if anything it is nose down but not by much.

The TC filler is the level plug, I believe most only get circa 2L or a little bit more on a Puma TC refill. Although I believe 2.4l is quoted as capacity.

Ok. I thought that was changed with the introduction of Puma and that the service fill was specified to 2,2 or 2,4 l.

On the Puma it is the MT82 for which the filler plug is no longer a level plug, the LT230 remains as before.

2.2Litres for the 2.4 and 2.4Litres for the 2.2 is specified by LR. Given its the same MT82 at the same angle who is to know why the different quantities. Having a 2.2 I measured the drained amount on the first ever MT82 oil change and it was 2.4Litres, so that’s what I put back in.

It’s a game with numbers isn’t? 2,2 for the 2,4 and vice versa. I drained a bit more than 2,4 but only put back 2,2-2,3. Probably the first ever for this box too. But I’ve read here of everything from empty boxes from factory to 3 l in the first drain so it seems LR wasn’t so precise in their filling.

We’re going south to central Serbia. My kids want to dress the Landy up as a reindeer, not sure how they will do that, so you’re not so off. I doubt we can reach the speed required for santas logistic challenge.
