l've seen a 2008 Defender 2.4tdci for sale, the vehicle has a very low mileage and l was thinking of buying it.
However l've read that the early 2.4 has an issue with the engine where the oil jets for the pistons don't work until the engine is warm. This causes the knocking noise and Land Rover's solution back then was to replace the engine. Obviously that's 16 years ago. lf l buy an early 2.4 is it going to have this fault, and is there a solution now, short of replacing the engine? Sorry if l am bringing up an old discussion but l don't know much about the Puma. This vehicle has been on sale at a dealer for nearly a year which does make me think, why has it not sold with under 10,000 miles and in such good condition. (it looks pristine from the photos) When was this issue rectified on the 2.4 Puma Defender? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335736539490?mk...media=COPY Last edited by lightning on 19th Dec 2024 8:36am. Hmmm.. That is extraordinarily low mileage. Has it had a new engine fitted?

No, it was owned by a rich guy who kept it at his French Chateau and only used it to take friends to the ski lodge (according to the dealer)
l checked and it hasn't been MOT'd in the UK since 2009 lt's had one since it came back. Total mileage from new 4,000. Serviced annually (including a new battery every year!!) Which is why l am surprised it hasn't sold. |

lf it wasn't so far away l would have probably bought it or at least been to have a look. But it's a 600 mile round trip from where l M
am. Most of the low mileage TDCi's seem to be in the South, probably because they're falling foul of the LEZ's. Being an early TDCi it's also over £700 road tax which is a bit of a stinker and probably puts some buyers off. Last edited by lightning on 9th Dec 2024 12:13am. Edited 1 time in total |

Too many people probably think it's an Ebay scam.
I'd need to be convinced it isn't |

It looks fantastic but that low mileage and no doubt short cold and low speed use would bother me personally, especially on a diesel engine. The rest of the drive train may also have suffered not really getting properly warmed up..
It's obviously an awful lot of money to spend if this lack of use rears it's ugly head if you buy it. Also i think it will fall into the top ved rate at that age and spec as am sure you are are already aware, but that may not concern you. Having said that it does look very nice and could be a decent long term keeper, sorry to be absolutely no use whatsoever to your predicament! Good luck though and hope it turns out well if you do go for it 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW 2002 Discovery 2 td5 GS (gone) 1994 Defender 90 300Tdi CSW (gone) |

AFAIK, the piston jet issue affected only very early engines. I believe it was sorted by 2008.

l am sure it's genuine, l looked up the dealer and they don't specialise in Land Rovers but have a fair bit of stock.
l'll see if l can organise an inspection, RAC or something like that. Last edited by lightning on 9th Dec 2024 12:14am. Edited 1 time in total |

If it was kept in France there must be import/export documents, either that or the story is little hard to believe Also, I know personal opinion, but why spoil the prestine looks with chequer plate? |

Apparently it was fitted from new. The owner specified every option in the book.

Just go buy it mate, you only live once! See if he can deliver? Then your covered by distance selling law, or go down and get it and make a weekend of it, if it’s not what you had hoped then a nice weekend away is still nice! Thanks Jim.

l have been looking at Puma Defenders as an option to replace my 2022 Defender.
Google Little Copse Garage and have a look at the under 20,000 mile 110 XS 2.2 they're selling. lt's out of my price range at £45,000 but they are negotiable on the price as again they've had it in stock for over 12 months. They don't come up on Ebay etc and l only came across them by chance. The issue with the 2.4 Station Wagons is the tax which is now over £700. The 2.2's are all Commercial which is much cheaper. The 2.2 can be converted to Euro 6 so it's more future proof. l've got an RAC inspection booked on the blue one anyway so l will report back. The seller has mixed reviews. They seem to be okay unless you have a problem with the vehicle. l would have to treat it as a private sale. l may be better with a higher mileage one. lf l start putting 10,000 miles per year on that one the value is going to go down to half the price l paid for within five years. |
