2009 110 USW - Wet carpets
Despite the torrential rains for the last few days I've been fairly impressed with the 110's water tight resilience with the exception of one location. The nearside rear passenger floor is wet on the underside of the carpet. On lifting the carpet I notice that the floor panel is wet but only on the nearside. I laughed when I saw how the carpet is secured to the floor which revealed the "hole" through which I could see my driveway. I therefore assume that this is where the water is making it's entry i.e. road spray. I'm monitoring that location for now. I've folded back the carpet to dry and I intend to plug the holes with some suitable plug even if that proves not to be it's entry point.

I've searched previous threads and can only find one other reference to these holes being the potential source of water ingress. That is now making me think, am I overlooking something else?

The door seals seem OK and both when stationary and being driven rain water doesn't seem to be getting in there. The rear seat box is dry beneath the carpet but at the edge of the carpet where it meets the junction of the floor and the rear of the door jam there is a black sticky substance that has been applied post construction. Is this the infamous dum dum? Could this be the source of the leak?

Possibly.....also if the door membrane has been breached (behind door panel) water can get in there, best of luck Mr. Green

Mine too. Mine leaks in on the join between the centre floor box and the floor. The first time I took it to the dealers and they insited it was not there but coming in on the roof join. They took three weeks to fix it and damaged the pain work in the process and it sitll leaks the same. I then just sealed the gap between the floor and box and it is fine now.

Be good to hear from someone who has a snorkel fitted as I believe the vent on the N/S wing is the culprit especially when there's a downpour.

Went for drive in the pouring rain this morning and on inspection is does appear to be coming in along the same joint that you mention.

I'm going to check with the main delear tomorrow because I suspect the transfer box oil leak/brake recall hasn't been done, they can check both at the same time. I'll point out the rust on the front bumper and one piece side steps too.

Further investigations reveal water making it's way along the joint between the top of the load space and the nearside. It doesn't appear to be via the foam joint it's below that. It's as if the nearside rear wheel/arch box is not sealed correctly. When stationery there is no ingress of water it's happening when driving on wet roads. The good news is the rest of the 110 seems watertight.

OK I have made some progress today.

Hunters of Chester are taking the car in on the 19th December to do the following;

1. Change rear windscreen, the heating elements aren't working properly, under warranty.

2. The oil leak will be looked at again on the 19th as well. Apparently the recall issue, leaking oil from transfer box, was dealt with by main agents sometime in the past. If the current oil leak is related to the recall work that was done, Hunters will not cover it under warranty. I would have to return the car to whoever did that work and argue the case with them.

The sidesteps were not a factory fitment and so are not covered by LR warranty even though they are genuine LR accessories.

The water leaks have been inspected by Hunter's body shop. They will contact LR to see if work can proceed. They will inform me next week.

I hope it stops raining soon!

Still loving it Very Happy

Items 1 & 2 completed by Hunters of Chester today. New rear screen fitted and oil leak traced to "PTO blanking plate needed resealing." Time will tell no doubt but I can't fault their service, everything sorted before 11.30 am. Courtesy car offered (I declined), phone call to tell me when it was ready for collection, friendly & helpful.

Next, sealing the colander like load space Rolling Eyes

well mines going in to Toppings in Enniskillen first week of Jan as I'm sick of mopping out the footwells every time it rains. Water comes in through the gap between the screen frame and the bulkhead, plus the hinge that joins them and the windscreen rubber. All classic Defender water ingress points I understand.
The only thing I don't understand is - if this is so common how come there aren't more problems from soaked electrics, mould, footwell rust etc etc ?
I'd much rather do the sealant job myself but I haven't got a garage and I don't know when we're going to get a few dry days in succession. I now realise that Defenders in wet climates need to be garaged or at least under a car port Sad

Fixed that one yesterday Thumbs Up

Dealer fitted a new door membrane and door card a couple of months age (long story) and ever since under the passenger footwell mats has been soaked after a downpour - always near the door.

Hail storm Saturday, no carpets in the passenger side as they were drying out again, and opening the door Sunday there was a pool of water about 3 inches away from the front of the door. Ran my hand under the door card and there was water. Took the card off and the new membrane had not been sealed to the door in that area and I could see water running from behind the membrane. Put some Dum Dum on the door and stuck the membrane to it.

After a day of rain today there was no water in the footwell.

The more I think about it the less I'm bothered about a bit of water. There's more water getting in when I open the door when it's raining ffs. My 05 Focus lets in water, has done for 6 years, that hasn't fallen to pieces and it's new owner is chuffed to bits. I think I'll just go with the flow, literally Cool
