The electricity went off at 6.15 am today (Saturday) and came back on at 8.20pm owing to Storm Bert putting in an appearance. Candles and windup lanterns were the order of the day. As Mr Bert is due to put in another appearance tomorrow the candles and windup lanterns are sitting out on standby.

No, always have them in stock. It is like owning a Defender, it is handy to have a master light switch in stock as you will need it someday

Some flash flooding here, but nothing I have’t seen before.

we just got the tail end of it by the looks of it, got the wind and rain, further in land from me, got the snow though, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

We had a competitive trail today in the woods. But trees kept coming down, so earl6 afternoon it was called as a cancel. Off we all went to find some local fords. Some nice ones that with a bit of speed came over the bonnet and a good rinse off

I had to pick someone up from Heathrow today. Absolute carnage on the roads with standing water and branches down everywhere. I counted more than a dozen broken down cars on the 303 and M3 alone. I saw an Audi drive through a wheelie bin on the A36, he didn’t even brake til after and still ended up in a ditch. Some cars were going way over the limit in the outside lane and then hard braking or swinging into the left lanes. For the first time in my life I was actually relieved to get to the 50 mph average speed cameras. There was a Police car on the ramp by the side of the M3 presumably waiting for speeding cars. Meanwhile 100 m ahead stuck between the barriers a family of 4 who’d broken down trying to shelter from the spray as cars were flying by on both sides. Poor sods must have been terrified and I can’t believe the police didn’t know they were there.
My Waze app was alerting me to everything from “bad weather” to “obstructions in the road” every few miles. It felt like the apocalypse. Oh, and a blacked out 90 with wide arches and a roof tent cut me up by overtaking and then swinging left in front of me to exit at Solstice services. Nice truck but you sir are a c… WARNING. Bad enough driving in those conditions but when you have to contend with people driving in such an insane manner it hits a whole new level. You did well to have a safe journey 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I just trundled along in the 110. Not too slow in case somebody went up my back but hopefully enough time to avoid the hazards.
I’m also glad I changed the wipers, boxes, motor etc a few weeks back. You get used to them slowly getting worse over the years and don’t realise how well they should work. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

I have always thought that for a vehicle designed to spend time in the mucky stuff that the wiper/washer system was a little below par. I know the wipers are small because the windscreen is small but there have been times when I wished for more water on my windscreen!
I would adopt a similar driving approach, leaving a good distance between me and the car in front. Usually the car behind me overtakes me and sits in that space. I thought the same but when they actually perform as intended they do a decent job. The only slight difference apart from all new parts and a decent amount of grease were the Bosch wipers and coating of Fast Glass. The car was completely covered by standing water untold times, not to mention spray from coaches, lorries etc but the wipers didn’t get overwhelmed once. Very impressed indeed. Variable speed relay and Autoglmn screen wash are worthwhile additions as well. It performs almost like a modern vehicle now! WARNING.

There was a time when I felt the same. After upgrading my washer system to something that is satisfactory, I can empty the reservoir with about ten minutes of continuous squirting (I always carry two 5-litre refills in the back at this time of year). In addition to the Optimil nozzle upgrade I have four jets on the drivers wiper arm (needed because the Optimill nozzle's jets tend to impact the driver's side wiper and hence not get beyond it), all supplied form a Disco2 headlamp washer pump, which is both higher pressure and higher volume than the screenwash pump. In addition I have headlamp washers which are great for keeping snow, mud, and road filth of the headlights. Topping up the reservoir is a weekly event at this time of the year though! |
