It's curious how the more posh and expensive the car, the more stupid the driver, or so it seems. Why do so many Mercs and Beemers end up in floods!

Stupidity? Entitlement? Probably a combination of both. A few winters back I had to recover a neighbour’s Porsche Cayenne turbo from his snowy field. Like many 4x4 owners he went in for a play. Nothing wrong with that, we’ve all done it. However he was outraged that his £150k car got stuck and had to be unceremoniously towed out by “an old Defender”. I tried to explain that 22” road tyres probably weren’t the best option for knee deep snow but he still wouldn’t have it. He didn’t even thank me afterwards. Looking back I wish I had left him stranded. WARNING.

I do carry extra water/washer fluid mixture. Things get really bad when the rain stops and traffic throws up road crud that just cakes the windscreen. You get through a lot of water on a journey like that! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Tell me about it!
I really need to figure out how to fit a much larger reservoir to the Defender. The standard one is ridiculously small by modern standards. |

Not really, it would be easier to fabricate one, but the real problem is simply a lack of space.

That’s true, and the fixing points are at some bizarre angles as well.
I guess you could have external dimensions taken by some expanding foam in plastic bag, but getting it out might be a reason not to do that, or modelling clay that could be adjusted. I’d imagine if there was a bigger version it would sell, it’s a bit of a pain having to top it up often. Also if the level keeps going down, consider replacing the cap I found mine leaked from the cap when it shouldn’t have and was losing washer fluid because of it. So that’s why plenty was disappearing faster than it was being used. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

On my quest to rid the engine bay of plastic I looked at getting an aluminium reservoir made up. Obviously can be done even with the odd shape but would be quite spendy. With 3D scanning it could be made bigger but I doubt it would be cost effective for many. Saying that if anyone fancies a go they can put me down for one! WARNING.

Fitting double washer jets saves a huge amount of fluid as it then only needs a short push of the switch to get the screen nicely covered, rather than the “hold down the switch long enough for the wind to blow the water around sufficiently to cover the screen” method that the factory single jet requires.
