Reverse trigger
Where are people finding a reverse trigger for reverse camera/monitor?

About to go double din, and camera so need a connection onto the reverse connection ideally as near to the head unit as possible.

Although part of me is thinking of just put a switch in.

You can also tap into the reverse light at the back. I used the continuous power back there and the reverse light as the trigger.

As above you can take it from the rear. (If you want to & prevents damaging factory wiring).

If you’d like to have a plug and play option, you may wish to contact PaulMC on here to help with that.

You can if you want, I have mine on all the time that the HU is on, and will auto pop up on screen if the reverse is selected.

That way you can select the camera any time as it’s on anyway, but will still come on screen when reverse is selected. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Here's what I did on my Defender -

The camera will have two harnesses - the power and earth for the camera on 2 thin red and black wires and the AV output from the camera to the radio.

When you run the harness from the camera location to the radio, connect the red power cable to an appropriate 12volt supply, I used the blue 'power antenna' output from the radio. This provides the camera with 12volts when the radio is switched on.

At the radio end I connected the black wire of the camera harness to the reverse signal wire on the radio, on a Kenwood this is a purple and white wire.

At the camera end of the camera harness leave the red wire as it is, cut the black wire and connect the camera end of the black wire to the vehicle body to create an earth. Connect the radio side of the black wire to the reversing light positive supply at the reversing light.

This way your unit will sense the reverse light via the black wire into the purple/white wire, but on some units you can also run the reversing camera on the screen all the time so by powering it from the radio's blue 'power antenna' wire the camera always has power. I like to do this on mine when I'm towing for example. A hastily prepared hand written wiring diagram is below!

There are lots of options, just bear in mind that the HU rmt12v output, usually has an output that maxes out at about 150mA. (Should be fused as such too).
Reverse Cams have a low draw usually, but the above output feed is a signal sense and not load bearing except for small current.
You may need it for an Amplifier also, or run it to a smaller 4 pin relay where it only powers the coil.
That way then you have a switched load capability that doesn’t have a load top end that is anything to worry about.

It all depends on what you would like to do with it, and how you’d like it to operate then you can set it up diagram wise as an example as Penfold posted.

Just bear in mind the load of that feed, hence me posting this as you don’t want to fry your HU circuits.

150mA FB glass 5mm fuse and holder is ideal for it, if you use the RCA outputs rather than the speaker outputs that is a cleaner signal too and reduces HU heat, but that does mean a more comprehensive install. Very Happy ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I’m running a Focal ISUB Active sub, which is also the amp for my front Focal ES100KE speakers. The rear is currently Focal 100AC (I think) which are getting absolutely trashed, as mine is a work vehicle. I am thinking of swapping these out potentially or/and amping them as I don’t think they are matching the front which is amplified. Not sure currently.

I have now bought a DD fascia, Mudstuff, a Kenwood DMX7722DABS head unit, and a Kenwood CMOS-230 Camera. Plan to connect to the Nak aerial which I believe is also DAB, but need to find the “bits” that make DAB as I’ve never needed them before.

A good point about current draw, check the spec of your camera. I have the Kenwood CMOS-230 camera which has a maximum current draw of 0.06Amp so well below the stated max draw from the power antenna circuit of 150mA.

I mounted my camera next to the rear washer jet which in hindsight is not ideal, but I have got good at remembering to wipe it with my thumb after I've loaded the dog in the back.

Mine is the same camera Thumbs Up

I’m not sure there is an ideal location for the camera that I can work out. They will always get dirty, and you are trying to see past a bloody big spare wheel. On my motorhome I fitted twin camera setup. One is rear view mirror style, and other is reverse camera. Works well, but headunit is twin input, back of van is clear and flat, so a very different setup. It is completely bloody useless at night though as it is infrared which is crap a a vehicle camera.

Well. Had a go at getting install done but run into a couple of issues straight away.

The Mudstuff usb c socket I got has an on/off switch on it, which I knew but hadn’t considered that every time I switch the ignition off, I would then have to switch on the socket every time after turning the ignition back on. No use to me.

The other issue is that the Nak DAB aerial has a different connector to the Kenwood head unit. Nak screw, headunit push fit.
