Is it a rattle? If you're on air suspension, it could be the rear shock tower bolts. They are known to become loose if you do a lot of off-roading or if you drive on a lot of rough pavement. This is only on cars with air suspension. See the attached threads on the Land Rover Forums site.

Well it could be! Doesnโt quite sound like the video a bit more muffled but then theyโre covered over in the back whereas they are exposed in the clip.
Very good starting pointโฆIโll have a look tomorrow morning . Thanks |

I have a similar issue with my 90 commercial not on rough ground but when towing. At first I though it was the trailer so I greased everything but it still happened and does periodically with all our trailers but not when towing with my wife's RR so it must be the Defender.
I've mentioned it to my dealer but they've not been able to identify any issues. |

Checked this morning. Both top shock mounts are entirely tight inc both nuts. The only thing I did notice that taking out the foam shelf was that the scissor jack rattled as I took the shelf out. For good orders sake I stuffed a microfibre cloth inside it which has stopped the rattle . I doubt itโs that as it has a light metallic sound whereas the other noise is more of a chirrup ! Moreover, the lower shelf is covered by the top shelf, which is then covered by a rubber load cover, which is then covered by a thick dog pet mat, then a thick towel, followed by two spaniels! So that would deaden the clink of the jack anyway I would have thought.
Will see how it goes today! |

Just been down a tarmac lane which has patches of compressed mud on both sides. The suspension makes a dull low key knock from both rear wheels as it tries to compensate for uneven hard patches - maybe this is the adaptive suspension doing its bit but Iโve never heard it before. Actually almost a popping sound!

The last time I had a dull knock from the suspension on a Land Rover it was my Velar, the N/S rear adaptive damper was leaking. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

I callled the local dealer today. They said I could bring it in next week for diagnosis only and if they didnโt agree with my prognosis I would be charged ยฃ189.00. I declined and said that Iโd wait for it to get worse and call LR Assist.
In the old pre corporate days you could drop by ask for a technician to accompany you on a test drive foc and then get it sorted. |

I broke two shocks already in this fashion. Looks like the nut get loose and then the strut from the shock goes out of the aluminium fixture. After that it's done.
The shocks cost about a โฌ1000,- a piece excluding labour. |
