[Wanted] Single phase motor
Thought I’d see what people have kicking about in their sheds! Looking for a single phase motor with capacitor. C.1400rpm, .055 to 1 kw. Can be flexible on shaft size as I can bore out the pulley it will be paired with. Needs to be foot mounted, preferable b56 but can make something else work.

I’m restoring an old Fobco star drill and want to convert it for 3ph to single.

Anybody got anything?
Cheers
Col

I imagine that you've considered and rejected the idea of using the existing motor with a VFD?

I recently changed my Bridgeport mill back to it's original 3ph motor with a VFD and wish I'd done it years ago.

Yeah I’d go for a VFD as well.

I have been thinking about vfd, but I want to keep it as traditional as possible. I realise that is just nostalgic nonsense, but a 70 year old drill with electronic seems a bit wrong! Also, when I reduce the frequency it will also reduce torque which will be an issue in some applications.

An excellent ambition but what could be more traditional than the original motor?

Using a VFD would mean that absolutely nothing on the drill needed to change, it would simply be connected to an external variable frequency three-phase supply. Perhaps the ultimate in "traditional" other than getting an old-school three-phase supply laid on to your workshop, and even that would mean that you wouldn't get the same degree of speed control.

As above, if you want originality, feed it 3ph...

...from a vfd.

You don't need to do anything to the drill, just take it's 3ph plug off and fit a suitable vfd on the end of the wire.

Be aware that not all vfds are equal. Most motors will run on cheap simple units, but others need "boost" units etc depending on how they're set up.

Id imagine your drill will only need a small simple unit. The last one I bought was £40 off Amazon...

This assumes the motor is dual voltage…

As stated, not all VFDs are equal.

"boost" units exist, theyre just a bit more money.

I’d love a link to a £40 one of Amazon if you can?

I've just looked at my old invoice and it was £53 all in, not the 40 that I incorrectly stated (apologies) however that's not the current price.

This is the link -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07X11HTX...&psc=1

Amazon price goes up and down all the time - I suspect if you look through other sellers there may not be one as cheap as I got it, but there will be someone at an easier price.

This was for small motor that could not be run off a standard vfd (I needed the higher voltage output). I forget what I once knew about 3ph motors but if you can run the motor in the, umm, other configuration, you can (probably) use a non voltage increasing unit, and they're cheaper.

(This was for the feed motor on a wadkin bao/s)

This is an exceedingly similar unit for the same sort of price I paid -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07TMZT6ZP/ref...V9kZXRhaWw

Again, 380v output if you need it, but only for small motors
