That panel is on the back of the heater box but is located in front of the heater matrix.
The shredded leaves may be because they have gone through the blower fan to get there where you found them, which is the lowest part of the system.
They would also need to be small pieces to fit through the grill in the intake on the wing. A snow cowl can help prevent this.

Aha, now I understand!

That as far as I remember is a blanking plate that covers the unused air intake port on the driver's side, since the air intake duct is on the passenger side. So to that extent you are correct, it is a hole leading into the heater box, and it leads into the fresh air (i.e., unheated, and uncooled is a/c is fitted) portion of the box. Any leaves and debris which makes it past the intake on the wing, through the intake duct to the blower unit, past the fan and through the duct into the heater box, will end up in there. So it is entirely possible that leaves and crud will end up in there.

I am tempted to remove mine to see what treasures I can find!

Somewhere I have a could of spare heater units and if I can remember where I stashed them I will try to get a photo to better explain the plate.

I am more than a little impressed that you managed to find that in the footwell and managed to remove it. It is not easily accessible.

sorry was busy doing the CarPlay upgrade, plus it's a bit awkward to get to the panel; is it the three screws you can see in the picture? Is is easy to refit after removing?

Torx bit by the looks of it, I have read before something about with service parts about a “cabin filter”.
But info on that is sketchy, so was info on the parts if any.

You certainly can hear some small amounts of debris around there if anything gets in there.

Was there any signs of any kind of filter at all or just a collection “void” that could be cleared out?

There is no filter in there, it is just an empty space (or possibly not empty if a squirrel has managed to get in).

Looks that way, it seems that a lot of these sites are confusing the product years and as the latest Defender does have a pollen filter they seem to be showing that the 2007 to 16 Defender does too.

It’s worth taking a look to see what has collected there though for sure.
It might be full up.

Mine is fitted with A/C and is LHD.
Opened the panel at lunch today, and took a picture :

I am sorry to say mine do not look empty, and neither is it full of leaves for what I can see in there.
Instead the space is filled with something plastic-like and whitish .... searching the workshop manual I can only conclude that what I see is the side of the A/C evaporator. Although I'm a bit surprised for it to be that color/material.

But then, those without A/C, should have a "diffuser plate" instead of the A/C evaporator, as explained here :

On a slightly different note in the above diagram items 2 & 3 are well worth lubing if ever you get behind the dash with some silicone grease, on mine they were completely dry.
Helps keep all the heater controls etc moving smoothly. Thumbs Up
